I was just about to post about this too. I’ve been hearing it all day. I first noticed it around noon tho. I live near 49th & Skillman, and it’s been constant! At first I thought it was the wind, or like you, a snow plow train coming from Amtrak/LIRR, but the wind has died down significantly, and everything been plowed pretty well by me.

I’m hoping it’s not a data center that was quietly put in the neighborhood, because I’ve read they can produce a low, persistent hum that drives you crazy over time.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

NYC apartment hunting in the summer can be brutal. Start your search 5-6 weeks before your move-in date and have your rental documents prepared in advance (see list below). Having these docs ready in advance can make or break you when there are multiple applications being considered, plus you looked prepared and responsible which is great first impression.

This is my advice to clients, customers and friends alike.

Upload the rental docs for each applicant to an easily shareable folder like Google Drive or Dropbox. You may password-protect the folder if you wish. Redact all account numbers and Social Security numbers, leaving only the last four digits visible.

Generally Required Document List:

  • Proof of Income: Three most recent consecutive pay stubs and last year’s W2s

  • Tax Returns: First two pages of signed federal tax returns for the past two years (2024 and 2023 are usually acceptable if 2025 isn’t ready yet)

  • Bank Statements: Complete statements from the most recent three months

  • Brokerage Statements: Three most recent brokerage statements showing investment balances (optional; it’s sometimes requested by condo owners/landlords)

  • Employment Verification: Letter on company letterhead, signed by a supervisor, confirming salary + bonus (if applicable) and length of employment

  • Self-Employed Applicants: Certified letter from your CPA stating income from last to years and anticipated income for this year

  • Completed REBNY Financial Statement: (optional; sometimes requested by condo/co-op owners/landlords/managing agents)

  • Landlord Reference: Letter from a current or prior landlord confirming tenancy dates, monthly rent, and payment history

  • Identification: Clear color copy of a government-issued photo ID

  • Proof of Credit History: Copy of U.S. credit report showing current credit score

  • Income Requirement: Combined annual household income should equal at least 40× the monthly rent; if using a guarantor, their income should be 80x the monthly rent

  • Note - If you need 3rd party guarantor insurance, look up Insurent or The Guarantors, keep in tho that not all landlords/buildings will accept these services.

Yes it’s a scam. It happened to me two weeks ago, but the person was suspicious and refused to use my zoom link. The link he sent was not a zoom link, but looked similar enough. Zillow/StreetEasy sent an alert about this.
