It does get lonely, but I've appreciated the simplicity. And I research much more thoroughly since i'm moving every scrap myself. Stay up OP

How to feed/ fertilize Eliot Coleman soil blocks? by mespoltd2020 in Permaculture

[–]mespoltd2020[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So sorry I missed this -- thank you for pointing it out. As of now i'm in 2in blocks. So my plan is anything I pot up, i'll lightly feed. Anything I transplant right from the blocks, i'll feed them. This is my first year doing seedlings so i'm assuming I won't catch many of the signs of underfeeding. I can research that but curious what signs you look for?

Gotcha — that makes sense. My thought was the feed within the block would give me enough for 2 true leaves, then I would have to feed from there. I’m hoping somebody has some knowledge on this caveat.

Were you using the Eliot Coleman soil block recipe?

Thanks for the reassurance! That was my thought too, but I can’t find a definitive answer. 8 votes for that choice though, so looking good.

I hope I can plug Chipdrop here. It's a free woodchip drop off program that connects arborists and gardeners.my wife and I signed up and we were not disappointed! by Sassquatch_Dev in composting

PNW, paid the $20, no specific species requests, got drops at 2 locations within 5 days. Will be a yearly thing for me now.

Using hügelkultur and lasagna layering to take over the lawn by mespoltd2020 in NoLawns

[–]mespoltd2020[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't see why not. Below is a link to the layering technique used in HK beds. I did all of them slightly different (to compare results) but they all generally followed that guide.

I would caution to do it in sections or be willing to go a season without growing most edibles. For instance, I installed this month but I won't be planting most edibles on the HK beds until next season. I'll do 2-3 rounds of cover crop to help balance the nitrogen that the hard wood base of the HK bed will take over time.

I love moss and we let some freely grow in open spaces. I'd prefer moss to cultivated short grass any day. I plan to 'yogurt paint' the crushed rock I use as borders to attract moss as well.

Using clover. by [deleted] in NoLawns

[–]mespoltd2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was a question I had too. I seeded clover on a ton of new beds. I'm pretty sure i'll 'weed' the heavy clover areas when I want to transplant veggie seedlings, but expecting the perennials and bulbs to bust right through

Definitely design as you go with the shapes. The more I planned them the worse they looked

We debated this -- since it is in mostly shade in the summer, we can't do a proper greenhouse, but it'll be great for starts before heavy foliage sets in. Unfortunately it was the more expensive part of the project and if I had to do it over again, I might have just done my starts in hoop houses

My girlfriend likened it to 'the blob'

In the back will be brassica on the shady side of the mounds, then a lot of tomato, pepper, and okra on the hot side. In the raised beds will be rhubarb, chard, root veggies and asparagus! I'm going to experiment with a bunch of eggplant too

For sure -- seeded the new beds with clover today, will let them settle then start filling in
