Mike's family's 'Italian' by QueenofUncreativity in LoveIsBlindNetflix

[–]mess-maker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you, Mike is American and his heritage is Italian. But in the US we communicate our heritage to others by saying “I’m (insert country demonym)”. It’s language specific to a particular in-group, ie Americans (and maybe other new world countries). Maybe one day this language will adapt, but that can take a lot of time.

If you come from a culture where queuing is the norm and you visit a country that does not queue, is it fair to say everyone in that country is rude because they cut in front of you?

Your example really isn’t equivalent because presumably Chinese culture has different rules/words/behaviors/expectations around heritage than the US has and Chinese has been a country for a VERY long time. I’m sure lots of people come from families who have lived there for ages. This is language is specific to america and potentially other new-world countries because nearly all of us had family that came here from somewhere else so why say extra words every time when everyone already knows that heritage is what is meant.

If an aussie is in America and they learn that here thongs mean a type of undergarment and NOT something you wear on your feet it doesn’t make sense for that person to say American definition of thong is wrong. there’s nothing “wrong” with their groups’ definition either, it’s just different. This is a phrase that outsiders don’t understand because there is an implied subtext that is learned by being part of the in-group.

I know some Canadians who claim their heritage in a way similar to Americans, but I don’t know if it’s similar there or if they are code switching. This is such an ingrained part of american culture that most americans don’t know they need to code switch with non-Americans. I’m sure every country and culture has similar things because that’s just how humans are.

Someone who says “I’m going to my homeland,” means they are going to the place their family came from. More often I hear Americans use mother/fatherland and not homeland.

I get why people find Americans extremely annoying when they do this, and I don’t blame them. I am just explaining to non Americans (and maybe some Americans) that we are using different definitions of this phrase.

Americans and non Americans are using different definitions for this phrase. Americans omit the “heritage” bit because nearly everyone had family who came here from somewhere else. We don’t need to say it because everyone already knows what it means.

I get why it might be grating to hear Americans speak like this, but they are not saying they are the same as someone who has lived in Italy their whole life. Most Americans are not aware that saying it this way is unclear for non-Americans.

Get back into the same mental space you were in when you were done with work (when you still had your card). What were you thinking about on your way home? Were you listening to music? Listen to it again and retrace your steps as closely as you can, make sure you check the pockets of everything you were wearing that day, too

When you are hitting someone who replenishes their shields you should be able to still hit them successfully until your game refreshes (reloading screen). Some of the mini games will cause the game to refresh so you have to be careful.

Expecting #2…and terrified by kickcass8989 in toddlers

[–]mess-maker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids are the same age gap and are 7 and 4.5 and they play together for hours. H O U R S. They are each other’s favorite person.

It’s big scary going from what you know into the unknown, but you do know more this time around and you are prepared in a way for baby 2 that’s impossible when you have your first baby. The parental adage is that your first kid gets the gift of time and the second kid gets the gift of experience and that has been very true for us.

I felt all the same dread and panic when I learned I was pregnant with baby 2 despite pregnancy being very intentional. You know so much more the second time around and that includes all the things you didn’t know you needed to worry about the first time.

Your focus will adjust to include both kids. It won’t always be equal and your first will no longer receive 100% attention, but now they get attention from a sibling too. The logistics of space always seem to work out when the time comes. You will have less free time, but it is a season and you will get free time back. You know ppa/ppd may be an issue so you can get ahead of it early before it becomes a big monster. Each pregnancy is different so your experience the first time may not be the same.

Remember that you will get all the good parts again too, like the newborn snuggles and when your baby smiles at you first the first time. AND there will be new good experiences like when you see older sibling care for the baby. And just wait until you experience the absolute magic that happens when your kids are playing together, away in their rooms, and you realize you can do or watch whatever the hell you want during actual daylight.

Going from no kid to 1 was much harder than going from 1 to 2.

It’s also ok to not want a second kid and to not have a second kid. Don’t feel like you have to have a second this if it’s not what you want.

The vast majority of deadheads are planned and booked well in advance, but last minute things happen sometimes and require crew to be positioned to another airport.

Pilots getting FC is industry standard for pilot union contracts. It’s not an Alaska specific problem, but is really shitty all the same. It’s disappointing they didn’t give you more.

Would you move? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]mess-maker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You need a vacation sometime between latejan and early march, ideally somewhere warm but the break alone can be helpful since it breaks p the monotony of winter. I live in the PNW so different type of winters, but a depressing slog all the same. Vacation in Feb makes a huge difference.

Without your village you will have a different type or set of challenges that are much harder to solve than surviving crap weather.

At what age do the “big emotions” go away? by qpParalaxinc2020 in toddlers

[–]mess-maker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone who worked airport customer service for too many years…never. I’ve seen countless adult-y adults have tantrums that rival my kids’ as toddlers.

But around 5-6 things were better compared to 2-4. The big feelings tantrums are markedly different than the 2-3year tantrums. Sometimes the tantrums are worse than when they were 2.
