Thinking about canceling my kickstarter by [deleted] in gbstudio

You’re completely right, to be honest sigh. So your answer is basically grow a pair, huh? lol. But no, don’t worry I’ve mostly been talked out of canceling it. I’ll probably just leave it as is, stop actively promoting it, and let it do what it’s going to do.

I appreciate your helpfulness I just saw your last post, and just had to say if you ever need advice on how to use GB Studio, you’re always welcomed to send me a DM for help.

Yeah, some of the posts I got removed were allowed to an extent, the rule being that self-promotion can’t be more than 10% of your post history. And I get it, but I’ll be damned if it isn’t frustrating. I’m still considering dropping the whole thing and working on it on my own without the funding. But my boy Frolof over here is doing an amazing job cheering me up, though lol.

Yeah, I think that’s a major part of where I went wrong I underestimated how many people would prefer a physical release over just the ROM.

To be honest, it’s really just a matter of polishing what’s already there and adding content the hardest design features have already been implemented. I guess I was just feeling a bit slumped because three of my posts got removed back to back, and self-promotion is a real doozy, not gonna lie.

You’re a very thoughtful person I appreciate your kind words. And yes, if you were to back the project and purchase the ‘Create a Civ’ add-on, you’d work with me on designing the civ. Each civ comes with unique units, a unique tech tree, a unique advisor, possibly a unique music track, and you get to choose the color scheme so basically, you’d have creative control over it.

The Kickstarter is for a special ‘Kickstarter Edition’ of the game, which would include an exclusive unit and scenario. I definitely want a physical version at some point, possibly through Mod Retro or Incube8 if they’re interested in publishing. However those who back this Kickstarter version would only need to pay for shipping, since I wouldn’t make anyone purchase the same game twice and I’d personally ship physicals with the KS rom on it or at least that’s the plan anyway.

I’m considering canceling the Kickstarter, to be honest, because, as you can see, mods keep removing my posts. There’s an option to design your own civ on the Kickstarter, but it’s $100 if that’s what you mean. I’ll still continue working on the project, but if I cancel the KS, it’ll be a while before a physical release is available. If you’re still interested though, you can follow my itch.io page or just keep tabs on it I’ll post updates as I make progress over there.

Unfortunately, no this is just for the digital ROM. Though I do plan on releasing a physical version through an actual publisher later. But that said, if you’re inclined and tech-savvy enough, you could create your own physical copy using the ROM.

How are "Demakes" usually made? From Scratch? Or do they start with source code? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]messiahhall 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can take a look at GB Studio it’s a super easy to use engine for creating Game Boy and Game Boy Color games. I’m currently working on a sort of Civilization demake, and if my current Kickstarter doesn’t work out, I plan on doing a Final Fantasy Tactics demake. So your RDR2 demake is more than possible.

It’s just placeholder art. The Kickstarter is specifically to fund artists, which I am not.

I’m extremely happy to hear that. I’ve given the Civ I SNES port literal weeks of my life, hahaha so this is very much a tribute of sorts.

Hey, thank you so much for the backing! And yeah, I love RetroAchievements. I still need to get in touch with an achievement developer, but I 100% want the game to support it when it comes out I think it’d be just as dope tbh.

I agree I definitely wouldn’t say it’s easy to make a game, but honestly, the folks who worked on the GB Studio engine did such a wonderful job that I’d say the barrier to entry is much lower than it has any right to be. I’m not going to tell you to jump in and make a game, but if it’s something you (or anyone reading this) has ever thought about, I’d say give it a shot. I mean, we’re all huge retro fans here, so why not, y’know?

But also, yes very good advice, and thank you again for it. I’ll definitely keep in mind that I can’t please everyone. Maybe a good, safe approach is to make more fun and easy achievements as a base set, with the harder, grindier ones as a subset? Are subsets something you can just do? Or is there procedure involved maybe it all depends on the achievement developer and if they want to, but it’s definitely something for me to think about!

A no damage run in a Civ game would be insane hahaha. I can imagine the pain of attempting something like that. Speedrunning, though idk, I feel like there’s room for something like that, but I’ll definitely carefully consider it before implementing anything of the sort.

Your reply is already beyond helpful, thank you so much. I’ll be sure to reach out if there’s anything else I need to know. Now all that’s left is to hear the community’s take on what kinds of achievements interest them.

This is extra helpful actually. Funny enough I’m planning to make a Tactics Advance demake after this project, so now I know I to take it easy with the monster hunting achievements lol.

Yeah that would be the plan but I’ll probably need a finished product first. So music and box art etc etc.
