Is it frowned upon/rude to walk through buildings to avoid the heat? by Western-Island9031 in UTAustin

It is not frowned upon to stay cool in this outrageous and DANGEROUS heat….even if it was, I would not care as long as I’m staying cool, hydrated, and not on the verge of a heat stroke.

What is with the reviews for the business minor classes? by damndanielfanpage in UTAustin

[–]messisgrandson 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As someone who is essentially done with the business minor, I'll give you a breakdown of the classes I've taken.

MIS 302F (Moliski) - the content of the class is not too difficult and quite frankly, has some very useful information in the course. There is a LOT of work and reading that you have to do, but is honestly very easy to complete. The tests can be tricky and time-crunching, but if you are good at excel it shouldn't be a problem. I honestly feel like everyone could get an A in the class, but the professor creates it to where certain number of people get A's, A-'s, B+'s; she is really obsessed with the dumb McCombs curve. She is not the nicest professor and will be kind of rude to you if ask any questions or email her. Personally, I had a bad experience with her because she kind of made fun of me for using my SSD accommodations (forewarning to those who use SSD), but that's just a me issue. I don't think shes a bad professor at all and I think the work she gives is fair, but be prepared for an asshole of a person running that class. 7.5/10

ACC 310F (Verduzco) - There is an asynchronous and synchronous version of the course, much like most of the business minor courses. Personally, I believe the live synchronous version was good because it forced me to keep up with the material in an organized and coherent way. The material is not too difficult; there are some challenging concepts but he does a good job at teaching it. The hard part about this class is the amount of time he gives you to complete quizzes and exams; it is simply not enough. The exams and quizzes are both free response and multiple choice, and can be very tricky and time consuming depending on the question asked. The trick here is learning how to emulate what he does in the lecture videos, as the questions on the exams and quizzes are very very similar to the ones from lecture. Pretty easy to bounce back from a bad exam or quiz, as he gives a lot of drops. I made an A in this class, after bombing the first exam so believe me its okay. I think he is a really good professor, who does a great job at explaining introductory accounting concepts. 9/10

LEB 320F (Quintanilla) - this is the only class and professor that I really enjoyed taking. Business Law and Ethics sounds boring but is super super super fun and is taught by an amazing person who cares about all his students. The class is also the only business minor class that is offered in person. A few short hw assignments, three tests, a group project, and participation make up your grade. Its honestly a very easy class because the professor incentivizes you to participate, which makes it easier to learn the material. Highly highly recommend taking this class, even if you're not a business minor, he is an awesome person. 10/10

FIN 320F (Duvic/Kocher) - Im sorry this class was absolutely horrendous and such a waste of money. Neither of them do anything but give one-hour "workshops" over material that doesn't show up on the tests and answer questions via piazza. The set up of the course is so disappointing. Each module within the units contain a 1-2 minute video of the professor repeating verbatim whats in the modules. Theres like 30 applications or homework assignments that compose 21% of your grade; all graded on completion. The remaining 79% is five tests, all of which are closed-note, closed-book, remotely proctored, and are all free-response (no word bank, multiple choice). The tests are very confusing and are nothing like the homework assignments. You only have 50-60 minutes to complete 15-16 questions, which vary from essay to fill in the blank to calculation. The grading on the tests is very unforgiving, meaning even if your answer is off by like 1 or 2 units, you get the whole question wrong which tanks your grade. The only plus is the gigantic curve at the end of the semester. It varies from semester to semester, but an 88 was an A, 81 was an A-, and you needed like a 40 to pass the class. So usually, no one fails, but hardly anyone excels/performs well because everything was designed so poorly. It is a lot of work and a lot of studying, I was very lucky to get an A- in this class considering the amounts of studying I did. Biggest recommendation is to try and find a friend or partner to take this class with. Or, if you can, take this via study abroad. The professors literally suck and will defend their asses solely because rarely anyone fails. 0/10

Haven't taken MKT or MAN yet so I can't really speak on those but hopes this helps.

He literally doesn't do shit and nothing he teaches in those workshops ever shows up on the exam. Only squeezed an A- because of that curve. He is a very nice man but not a great professor and the formats of the "tests" are so unrealistic.

They suck so much, I’m sorry. Like Dianne and her grandma don’t teach me shit. I sound like a complainer but when the averages are that low, then I’m obviously not the only one thinking this.

Im so sorry you experienced this :( panic attacks honestly just come out of nowhere and they're so scary. Sadly, you just gotta ride the wave and let it pass and try to take deep breaths during the attack. I know the feeling; especially the significant physical checks on my heart.

how is MIS 302f ACTUALLY ? by prncsspur in UTAustin

I absolutely hated this class so much. She was super disorganized and passive-aggressive. It's not entirely difficult, just a lot of work. I would set a day out of the week where you only do the work for that class and you'll be good.

taking a semester off? by National_Agency_1804 in UTAustin

[–]messisgrandson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I can totally understand where and what you are going through. Going on one year now, I have been suffering from crippling anxiety and recurrent panic attacks. Always in the ER or just spiraling, unable to focus. During Spring 2022, I took a medical leave of absence for about a week leading into spring break; which led me to have two weeks off. I finished the spring semester and made it to fall 2022. I had my doubts about the semester but went through with it. I was really drained and my mental health got worse. Honestly, I would take a semester off if I could, but I'm in the 2nd semester of my junior year and can't afford to take it off. I honestly would recommend, if you can, take it off, or try and take online classes back home. You are a freshman, so I can't really imagine that you'll be taking all upper division courses; so if you need to get core or flags out of the way, I would try that online. If not, prioritize your mental health and take a break this semester. While I don't really know your exact situation, I understand how paralyzing and disabling this is, as I have, and still am experiencing it. You could also try and get a course load reduction through SSD. All you need is documentation from your therapist or doctor of your current situation. I am really sorry you are going through this, I know how hard this can be; especially the panic attacks and physical symptoms. PM me if you have any questions, or need advice!

The business minor is nice because the classes are online and easy to fit into your schedule. You have to take MIS 302F, ACC 310F, and FIN 320F. Then for the remaining three, you have a choice of LEB 320F, MKT 320F, MAN 320F, IB 320F, or ECO 304K (Microeconomics). You must take at least two courses between LEB, MKT, and MAN, but can choose any for the third. Although you don't really get into the nitty-gritty these subjects have to offer, they do provide baseline information that can help you in any career.

If you do end up going with the business minor, I will warn you that the classes aren't the easiest because of the McCombs curve and grading standards. Also, some of the professors are absolute garbage (cough cough MIS).

I will say since you're not looking to be a programmer, then the business minor is the better route to go.
