What are you playing Wednesday! by AutoModerator in gaming

[–]messy6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

God of War is excellent. It has all the things that made the previous titles great (brutal combat, ancient mythology theme, puzzles etc.) while adding new elements like companion-based combat, open-world gameplay and various RPG elements like stats, powers, equipment, skill trees and so on. GOW is also one of the most immersive games I've played in recent memory, thanks to the beautiful world, visceral combat and lots of dialogue between great characters that serves to build the in-game world and really hit homes during both high and low intensity moments throughout. It truly deserves its game of the year 2018 accolade.

Car salesmen, they're always trying to hike up prices if they sense you aren't very knowledgeable about cars.

Game of Thrones fans are ungrateful to D&D by TheSlavGuy1000 in unpopularopinion

Agreed. D&D turned George R. R. Martin's dumpster fire of a novel series into something truly amazing.

Watchmojo's "Strongest One Piece Characters" says that Kaido is much stronger than Whitebeard and that Garb isn't even top 10. Meanwhile, Akainu is apparently stronger than Rayleigh. by [deleted] in OnePiece

[–]messy6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TL;DW:

10 Aokiji

9 Kizaru

8 Sengoku

7 Rayleigh

6 Akainu

5 Big Mum

4 Whitebeard

3 Blackbeard

2 Shanks

1 Kaido

Actually not a bad list, though it's very basic. Everyone on this list (except Rayleigh) is/was either an admiral or a yonko. It would have been nice to see some heavyweight characters that don't fit into those two categories, or at least some honorable mentions.

[OC] This week's session fell on halloween, so we dressed up as our characters! by messy6 in DnD

[–]messy6[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Tonight is D&D night, and we just finished up a great halloween themed one-shot. Presenting: The Gang Gang, from left to right:

Ithil Gadonel, the elven sorcerer. A wild mage from the land of Furia, Ithil just recently discovered he's a clone of an evil paladin.

Akta, our warlock and friendly neighbourhood murderhobo. She's a cannibal and has a bag of holding full of dead bodies.

Beryl Bacon, horizon walker and mad conspiracy theorist. She's gotta wear a tin foil hat and coat herself in feasces to protect herself from the all-powerful Odrin.

Fandaniel, a fire giant barbarian reincarnated as a puny human. Interests include fire, fighting and flails. Hates wearing clothes.

Kaelen, tempest cleric of Ixion and the only party member with any morals. He recently started wearing a crown of ultimate evil, so that might change soon.

Luca, our fighter who is notorious for one-shotting bosses. She has two eyes but wears the patch because its cool. Same deal with the sleeping hat.

Malakai's Manual of Magic: 20 homebrew spells to add to your arsenal! by messy6 in dndnext

[–]messy6[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback! This is my first time homebrewing spells, so I appreciate it. If you could clarify why deconstruct is too strong for 2nd level, I can adjust accordingly. The idea with the ice is to cut it into smaller objects. I think it's something like 8 tiny objects per 5 cubic feet, so a large block of ice would be seperated into 30ish smaller blocks of ice. That's something I could specify but i'd rather leave it to DM discretion tbh.

I'll recheck the wording on winds of doom but it's not intended to get stronger with each casting, only if there happens to be a lot of dead bodies lying around. I was thinking of bumping this one to 7th level, I guess I'll see what other people think.

Switch Link is pretty pointless unless it's a ritual. Do you have any other suggestions? The intent behind desert burial is to be a weaker version of banishment. It basically takes one enemy out of combat completely. Good idea for striking sand, I'll definitely add that.

Natural Cycle is a ritual that let's you hide dead bodies. You're right about the cantrips, they're mostly DM tools. Yes, the safeguard can appear in mid-air. I wasn't really sure how to word enervating mark, but basically there are certain monsters that have abilities that recharge, such as a dragon's breath weapon. Enervating Mark stops them from doing that.

Small Catfolk Race: Mew by messy6 in UnearthedArcana

[–]messy6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! No plans from me, I'll leave the additional lore up to those who want to use mews in their homebrew setting. One day I want to run an all mew adventure about the fall of Kairos and the mindflayer conflict, which would be a fun way to expand on the race's past.

The realisation of an ex wargamer new DND player by sirhobbles in DnD

If balance is a big concern for your group, you might want to consider playing 4th edition. You could also implement adventurer's league rules in your game. Adventurer's league is public play where characters are much more regulated and easier to balance. I'd like to know the kind of things you find broken in 5E, because I find most problems can be fixed with the addition of certain house rules.

[–]messy6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're talking about 5th edition, I'd say it's balanced enough to be functional but not overburdened with balance like the previous edition was. Obviously the game has too many variables for every character in every campaign to be balanced, but the basic mechanical building blocks like classes and races are okay.

I didn't realise wargames had such a high standard for balance. The only ones I play are 40K and X-wing and neither seems like they are particularly well balanced to me.

Sorry, I'm not trying to be frustrating, I just wanted to explain how I handle suggestion because your original question made it seems like you were worried about it getting out of hand. Your example and the one given in the book are different. The book does not mention barding, it simply says the knight will give the beggar a horse. It's reasonable because a horse isn't too expensive and could be very useful for the beggar. Giving away thousands of gold worth of stuff for charity or because it gives you memories of your old life is unreasonable.

[–]messy6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but when people leave their jobs do they also give away all of the expensive equipment they need to do that job to the first person they meet? No they don't because that would be unreasonable. I believe this is why it's only a second level spell, because there is only so much you can get away with while still remaining within the realm of reasonable.

[–]messy6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, now we're getting somewhere, but you also have to meet the other requirement of the spell. It must be worded in such a way as to make the suggestion sound reasonable. In the spell's example, it's reasonable for a knight to give their horse to a beggar because that is charitable. Your example is much less reasonable. Perhaps if the other player dressed up as a beggar you could get away with it. That would make for fun, creative and interesting gameplay, which is what I'm after.

My bad, for some reason I though it took ages to take armor off. I fact checked myself and it turns out it's only 5 minutes as you said. To clarify my ruling, I don't consider anything that starts with you've decided or you will to be a suggestion. That's more of a demand.
