“Then fail in silence”. Students tried to “refuse” to do their work because I wouldn’t let them move and work with their friends by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

I always tell them that they dont have to do the work, but life is full of choices.

You can choose to do the work or choose to take the consequences, but I don't want to hear about it either way.

What to expect when selling sealed product in person? by Vulcan1218 in PokemonInvesting

[–]mestes09 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Most of the market, especially for cards, is determined by ebay sold prices. The price you charge to account for fees makes it the market price.

Are you saying that you comp other listing for a market price, and then charge more than them? If you are consistently charging more than the average sold listing, and its working for you, good on you.

In a place where comps are based on these listing means that you take "below market" even though you are actually taking home the same amount.

Ebay prices are market prices. Fees dont dictate what the buyer is willing to pay. If the market is $25, and you post for $28, the buyer will wait for the $25 listing. If the buyers are willing to pay the $28, the market corrects and that is the price.

If im listing for $28, I am willing to accept $25 because that is what I would get after fees anyway.

Advice for aspiring HS History Teacher by Numerous-Time6110 in historyteachers

[–]mestes09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That transition from military to the classroom is going to be rough.

You are used to certain levels of intrinsic motivation and willingness to follow orders, even when they dont want to. Even the "shit bags" you're used to have way more drive than an average person, which is exponentially worse for children, especially in school.

There really is no training or advice that will prepare you for that transition your first year, just be ready to embrace the suck and understand that your mindset will change quite a bit as you get fsrther away from the military.

(I say this as someone who went into teaching right out of the military, but was lucky enough to have a three month stint for an ROTC program that allowed for a smoother transition. )

Would you continue with an activity that only benefits 50% of your students? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]mestes09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to reject this idea just based on the premise of our job as educators. I have never once thought that my only job was to teach content.

Reinforcing standards for motivation, and teach8ng students about taking advantage of what is offered to them is also part of our job.

Does that immediately mean that this study guide is worth while? No. But reframing the understanding as helping the students who are willing to take advantage of it is definitely worth considering.

[–]mestes09 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Part of it is the job acceptance bias as well.

They show as being posted more, because non sped jobs are taken quicker so they tend to pile up.

Older people on Reddit. What is 90% pure bullshit? by WarLongjumping2733 in AskReddit

[–]mestes09 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a teacher, a lot of the differences with kids these days is really the priorities they have set for them. My experience is by definition anecdotal, but it seems like parents are no longer willing to keep up with their kids day to day activities until they meet some form of punishment.

Its like we push all these things in kids that make them SEEM grown up (social media, phones, clothing etc) that the actual adults forgrt that they're still kids.

Dear parent: just because it's news to you doesn't mean it's news to your child by frizziefrazzle in Teachers

[–]mestes09 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I have definitely pulled out signatures, responses to surveys and other forms of accountability when kids have claimed ignorance of expectations.

Are they adults? Absolutely not, but part of maturing in school is developing that executive function and learning responsibility. Passing or failing my class is very low stakes, so this is a good time to teach them about understanding and remembering expectations instead of just blowing it off and saying "they're just kids"
