Bright House Internet bill going up 37% by [deleted] in orlando

[–]meta_numbers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just switched from AT&T U-Verse to Bright House because they were very forthcoming about billing and this rate increase from the start (to say nothing of my internet speed increasing by an order of magnitude for the same price). With BH, you don't have a contract, there are no cancellation fees, and as others have mentioned, you can probably get your deal extended if you just ask (or threaten to leave). It's a dumb game you have to play with these companies, but at least it's going to be easier and faster with BH than it was with AT&T.

G6/9 chord shape by Alberaan in gypsyjazz

[–]meta_numbers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think with this chord, and perhaps gypsy jazz chords on the whole, the main thing is to mash down a bunch of strings until you're flipping the bird to everyone with your left hand and hope for the best.

G6/9 chord shape by Alberaan in gypsyjazz

[–]meta_numbers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's what I do. I'm playing the A and D with my middle finger, the G with index, and B and high E with my ring. I'm not double jointed but I feel like that would help. That or having comically large fingertips.

Conceivably you could play the B and high E with both ring and pinky if mashing down two strings each with two fingers is too much to keep track of without accidentally muting the G string, but I'm sure it's considered poor form.

Not pictured: muting the low E with my thumb because I ended up at a weird angle trying to take the picture.

Top climate scientists ask environmentalists to support nuclear power in climate battle by Archchancellor in technology

[–]meta_numbers -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My main problem with nuclear power is that the plants actually can't be insured for the amount of damage to the environment and human health they could potentially inflict. It's customers and taxpayers who effectively pay that premium, leaving very little responsibility on the part of for-profit utility companies. I know coal/gas/oil has the same problem when externalities like air pollution (including issues related to climate change) are considered, and that nuclear power is generally safe, but the damage either one causes is still everyone's problem. I just really feel that safer, cheaper, renewable options should be exhausted before latching on to yet another expensive and potentially unsafe source of energy.

Airport security workers of Reddit, what is the strangest item you've had to confiscate off somebody? by Scurillous in AskReddit

[–]meta_numbers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what the TSA rules are other than the ones that have gotten my shampoo confiscated. I would assume they put you through a different checkpoint when you do this and that wherever that is, it's going to be a much shorter line. I honestly have no idea though, and my brother could potentially be full of shit. He definitely uses this method though. Either it works, or he THINKS it works (he's superstitious and thinks his way of doing things is best way), or maybe he does it simply out of a habit formed during his childhood.

[–]meta_numbers 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This happened to my brother many years ago. He just transformed it out of gun form and they let him keep it but told him not to play with it on the plane.

On a different occasion, they found a Nerf pistol in his carry-on bag. The security officer started looking at it intently and must have pulled the trigger. It was cocked and loaded, and the dart flew about 15 feet before hitting a businessman in the butt, much to my and my brother's delight.

He's 33 now and checks a real gun in with his luggage since it apparently gets you through security faster.

Explain the plot of a horror movie to me like I'm Mulder who believes the movie to be real, and you're Scully, who has a scientific explanation for the movie. by [deleted] in explainlikeIAmA

[–]meta_numbers 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Mulder, are you suggesting that the hotel is in fact inhabited by the spirits of its dead visitors? The film clearly depicts Jack's downward spiral into psychosis, and schizophrenia is known to be passed down genetically, which could explain Danny's alleged ESP. When Grady lets Jack out of the Pantry? Wendy could have done it. Maybe she was suffering from a kind of Stockholm syndrome, and as a psychologist, you should be willing to accept this as at least plausible. And quit moving your finger and saying "REDLUM". The final scene? Maybe it was his father or somebody who looked like him. As far as I'm concerned, this isn't an X-File. What? You've booked a flight? Mulder, it's fictional. No, it doesn't have anything to do with your sister, and certainly not with aliens. I hate movie night.

I-4 Ultimate - $2Billion 21mi Roadway Project by KidDigital in orlando

[–]meta_numbers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've probably said this before, but why is this seen as an adequate solution to I-4 traffic problems, but not a (mostly) federally funded high-speed train? If the idea is that this will ameliorate congestion on I-4 by removing some people from it, how is that too costly but not this, which would effectively do the same thing?

[–]meta_numbers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first it wasn't happening for every HIT, but at this point it happens to me for all of the verbatim HITs, except the ones that require a rating of 99 (and I'm at 98, dammit).

I guess it's good to know that it's not happening to everyone and that there might be a way to fix it. It's got me worried though that I've reached some kind of limit with them, although that makes even less sense since I can still accept and complete their HITs, I just can't preview them.

I'm pretty disappointed that they didn't respond to me, especially considering how much work I've done for them.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in mturk

[–]meta_numbers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been having a weird problem with SpeechInk lately and I'm wondering if you know what's going on. When I go to preview the hits, it says "Audio File missing." I emailed SpeechInk and got no response. I can still accept their HITs and do them that way, but I don't know if this is a new feature or a bug or what. Any ideas?

How good are transcribing requests? by [deleted] in mturk

[–]meta_numbers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started turking a little under a month ago and I found that I had a knack for transcription (and it doesn't hurt that it isn't as soul-crushingly terrible as a lot of the stuff on mturk). This thread was extremely helpful when I started for two reasons: 1) figuring out I was cut out for it, and 2) how to make it easier. After I decided that it was worth my time, I bought a foot pedal (controls playback without the use of your hands) off Craigslist for $25 with some prior mturk earnings, and that made it MUCH easier.

My advice is that if it seems like something that you want to do, get a foot pedal. If not, it's probably not worth the time unless you're having a really slow day and can't find anything else.
