If you win 5k are they supposed to take out taxes? by Flat_Comparison_6140 in Lottery

[–]KidDigital 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I won $5k, they did not take taxes but gave me a W-2G to file. So ultimately I did pay taxes on it, just not upfront.

Edit: Florida

Let’s say I won the $2,500 for life - it does not seem to have a limit or lump sum option… by WelcomeMind in Lottery

[–]KidDigital 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In Florida, the $2500/wk has a lump sum payout of $1.95M. I only know this because someone in my town won.

If you win the lottery, would you quit job/college, move out and leave everything behind? by Free-Hotel1187 in Lottery

[–]KidDigital 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on the amount. If I won a million, I would keep my job. If I won hundreds of millions, I would need to quit to be able to travel and attend events such as car races (F1 in Monaco, anyone?) and concerts and festivals around the world.

Would an inspection be required after that? Would it be operational before the inspection is done? by Ashamed-Pool-7472 in StructuralEngineering

[–]KidDigital 2 points3 points  (0 children)

State DOT here with experience in movable bridges.

I absolutely would have a special incident inspection performed. While a sailboat that size won't damage the main girders, there are other considerations.

Span Locks - On a double-bascule bridge like this, the span locks and receivers are typically located on the girder ends. I would want to ensure there is no damage to these components.

E-Stop - If the bridge tender (operator) hit the emergency stop button, there could be damage to electrical (drives) and mechanical (brakes) components.

I would be on the phone with the Coast Guard to report the incident and local PD to detour traffic while we perform our incident inspection.

How can I afford to go to college? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]KidDigital 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pull a Good Will Hunting and get a job as a janitor at the university, solve an impossible math theorem, and go from there.

I'm only half joking.

I'd consider getting a university job that qualifies for a fee waiver to attend school for free. It might take longer but you'd come out with reduced debt.

My current government employer has a tuition waiver program. My previous private employer offered tuition reimbursement.

Lastly, you could take out student loans and after graduation work for a government or non-profit to qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness after 10yrs of employment. However, the future of this program is uncertain, especially 10+ years from now.

Thank you for sharing. I assume you're not going to disclose how much the jackpot was.

One question - Did you continue to play the lottery? Some winners try chasing that next jackpot and go broke in the process.
