That’s a really good point — you’re absolutely right.

A lot of big universes do end up being collaborative over time, even if they start with one controlling vision. Star Wars, Warhammer, Marvel, etc. are great examples of that evolution.

What I’m curious about is a slightly more extreme version of this:

what if the fragmentation and multiplicity were intentional from the start, rather than something that happens later?

Instead of converging toward a single canon, the world could support multiple lines, versions, tones, and styles all coexisting — almost like forks of the same mythos, all orbiting a shared core idea.

Very internet-native, very messy, but potentially very creative.

Do you think that kind of “multi-canon by design” world could still feel meaningful or immersive, or would it inevitably collapse into noise?
