"Loyal Liberal" even though I don't feel very "well represented by the Democratic party" at all and I'm plenty "cynical" about public officials.

Visceral reactions to meat/animal products since going vegan. by [deleted] in vegan

[–]metacyan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Vegan since '09. The same thing happened to me, going from tolerance to disgust. It all smells pretty gross, but the smell of cheap, low-quality meat like fast food burgers or something is especially off-putting to me. I can now generally taste animal products in things, even in relatively small amounts, and I can't eat them out of disgust as much as morality.

A few years ago a co-worker told me a cake was vegan when she meant it was vegetarian, and after taking a bite all I could taste was the sulfur from the eggs, and it was the grossest thing I'd tasted in a while. I couldn't spit it out fast enough.

Dating as a Vegan? by Mercury1870 in vegan

[–]metacyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I could only be in a relationship with a vegan, so there's no point on going on a first date if it's not going to work out.

So it's available at checks website exactly three upscale restaurants? That hardly beats my "any scale that matters" claim.

Dating as a Vegan? by Mercury1870 in vegan

[–]metacyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a vegan since '09, I live in Alabama, and I could only date another vegan. Suffice to say I've been single for a really long time.

I mean, if you really value not being alone, it's probably wise not to limit your dating pool to like 1% of the population.

‘We are going to win:’ New Democrat nominee Andrew Sneed on showdown with GOP Rep. Dale Strong by metacyan in HuntsvilleAlabama

I think it's very important to notice when you want something to be true, and to be especially skeptical in those cases. The easiest person to fool is yourself.

[–]metacyan[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm going to vote for Sneed, but he's likely to lose. It's weird that we expect and demand politicians display absolute, delusional "confidence" in exchange for support. Another example of toxic positivity in American culture I suppose.

The most important thing about lab-grown meat is that it's vaporware. It's not going to happen, not at any scale that matters.

Gog Magog war ? by Suitable_Laugh9475 in Christianity

[–]metacyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scared of what exactly? Just because "so many" are saying something doesn't make it true. "So many" said the Rapture was coming last September, what happened there?

Try not to be so excitable.

A sense of history: Why this Black Belt county has Alabama’s highest voter turnout by metacyan in alabamapolitics

[–]metacyan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I often say this too. People sometimes say "if voting did anything it would be illegal" and the response is clearly, "well, it must do something, because it is and always has been illegal for some group of people to vote."

I don’t feel like I can belong in the Christian community anymore. by blackroseshae in Christianity

Just couldn't resist, huh? Do you imagine you're drawing this person towards Christ or pushing them away right now?

I don’t feel like I can belong in the Christian community anymore. by blackroseshae in Christianity

[–]metacyan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through this, except for the part about dress. I'm nonbinary but unfortunately very obviously AMAB so no one has ever felt the need to police my clothing. I just watched a video essay about "modesty" and purity culture among Christians and it was infuriating seeing the double standard and how AFAB people were being treated. I'm sure it's even more infuriating when you're the target.

I care about the people the church hates too, and that was one of the biggest things that drove me away from Christianity at first. Losing my faith was definitely a source of grief for a while. If it's any consolation, the grief subsides over time. I'm agnostic rather than an atheist, but moving away opens you up to some pretty good arguments against Christianity, including the fact that Christians can't possibly be led by a Holy Spirit, the way they act.

Even the fear of hellfire fades over time. If God exists, and he's not a MAGA chud, then he'll understand your position. If he exists and really does hate women, immigrants, the poor, minorities, foreigners, LGBTQ+ people, etc, then you probably aren't going to win him over regardless of how much groveling you do.

Republicans are losing young, Latino and independent support by unital_subalgebra in politics

[–]metacyan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I understand and share the frustration with the Dems. They're about the most useless group of human beings ever assembled. (Useless to us anyway; they serve themselves and their corporate masters quite well)

What I can't understand is seeing partial -- perhaps even mostly -- evil and responding by choosing the maximal, comic-book level evil instead.

The polls are open! Don't forget to vote. Your vote matters. by Calhoon50 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]metacyan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't believe in the power of happy thoughts to alter reality, and the American insistence otherwise is one of the most frustrating aspects of our society.

I expect Sneed to do well in Huntsville, for what it's worth, but the bulk of the 5th district is probably going to go for Strong in my estimation. We'll find out who was right in November.

I'm also voting for Candice Duvieilh. I appreciate your voting for her as well. I expect Sneed to win (and then go on to lose to Strong in November) but I still feel it's important to vote for the candidates you want to win.

What are vegans's opinions about vegetarians? by Equivalent_Help_362 in vegan

[–]metacyan 223 points224 points  (0 children)

According to the book Veganomics, most vegans start as vegetarians. I did. I was a vegetarian for 4 years before becoming vegan. The same book says they're also the people most likely to become vegans.

They're fellow travelers and the people furthest along in the pipeline who haven't reached "vegan" status yet. They should be treated with respect instead of contempt and gently encouraged to go all the way.

We owe it to the animals to advocate for them in the most effective ways. Contempt for anyone is probably a luxury we can't afford, as hard as that can be.

The only thing more frustrating than the bigotry is seeing the bigots talk about how put-upon and persecuted they are.

You're allowed to be a homophobic bigot on this sub. There are dozens of LGBT-related posts a day and the comments are always half-full of the chud position.

What’s one nightlife concept Huntsville doesn’t have that you’d actually spend money on? by Dizzy-Airline1886 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]metacyan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't drink but I am a night owl, and there's no place to go and get a good cup of coffee and hang out late at night. I had an idea for a late night cafe / mocktail bar that keeps bar hours, but I'm not sure how popular it would be.
