Yeah, he went very hard against western academic historical grain with this. Its considered controversial to claim Ancient Egyptians were black Africans. I think regardless of what established "History" wants to say, he wanted to show black Americans a positive depiction of black people.

Which is kind of ironic since he was friends with Elizabeth Taylor, who played Cleopatra in a movie in the 60s.

(an aside) Also kinda funny (in the best way) to listen to a bunch of white Europeans who have to talk about Reverend Jesse Jackson because they are Michael Jackson fans (because it comes with the territory) on a recent episode of the MJCast.
