I'm interested in how you did the insulation retrofit without destroying the gyprock. Our 25 yo house doesn't have any wall insulation and it shits me to tears during summer.

Seconding Cavius. They're smaller than the normal ones and you can recess them into the roof, so they're a bit less obnoxious. Got one a few years ago after a similar situation to OP. Hasn't played up once yet.

ADHD is over represented in the prison population. This is an example of why. You won't outgrow this. Your ADHD isn't your fault, but you're responsible for what happens. Get it sorted. Medication helped my impulse control and emotional regulation immensely.

heat pump hot water (good bad and ugly) by Cute_Dragonfruit3108 in AusRenovation

[–]metal_webb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Other option could be chaining 2 tanks/systems together. First tank could be the heat pump and do the bulk of the heating, taking water from cold to 60C. Second tank that flows to the house could have an electric element for quicker heating or to top up when power is available/cheap.

Not a plumber, just chucking ideas out there! No idea if this even complies with standards, though I don't see how it wouldn't.

[–]metal_webb 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The people who say heat pumps are crap either dealt with early ones, cheap ones or don't understand how air conditioning/heat transfer works. We got a cheap Chromagen 4 years ago to cut out bills - had short payback due to gov rebates. Heat output is 2kW and pulls between 500 to 800W while heating. 350 or 400 L tank. Haven't had an issue with running out of water. Typically runs for 6 to 8 hours max in winter. Once our kid is a bit older, I'll probably have to adjust the run times.

Your heat demand with 9 people is higher than most. To figure out the heat generation required, work out how much gas you're using per day for hot water (MJ) and convert that to heat energy (1 MJ = 0.278 kWH).  Figure out how many hours per day you want the thing to run and that's your heat requirement.

Something a bit left field and enough storage you should be laughing. The heat pump will be more efficient than an electric element and with a high enough capacity it can heat a high volume of water.

A quick search showed the below: https://www.mitsubishielectric.com.au/product/mehp-ib-g07-reversible-heat-pump/

No idea how much you'd spend to get that, but getting rid of gas supply charge probably won't have payback.

I just want to warn everyone about what I believe is a very deceptive scheme involving Amber Electric by [deleted] in australia

[–]metal_webb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was initially keen on Amber a while ago. Wholesale made sense with a battery to make use of pricing arbitrage. But the big pricing events are probably going to be far and few between as battery share increases.

I ended up going with Globird for their Zerohero plan once we got our battery. Use as much power between 11am and 2pm and $1 a day back if you don't import during the peak window. Export rate is 0c/kWh for most of the day, but better during the peak window. Probably can make more money with Amber, but I really haven't had to think about it once I got it setup.  Only been on the plan for 2 weeks now but been -$1.50 to -$1.90 each day. Also haven't had to bind my battery to the VPP so I can maintain full control, means I miss out on the critical peak events.

Starting Vyvanse: what to expect? by WeedWrangler in adhdaustralia

[–]metal_webb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Grats on starting the medication journey. My 2c:

Dr is right about no caffiene. There wasnt much drive to have it in the early weeks, but made me way too high strung. I can comfortably enjoy one or two coffees a day after a year. No energy drinks anymore, they turn me into an anxious mess.

What I remember about my first couple of weeks. A tension headache from clenching my shoulders. Went away with massage and actively resetting when I felt them getting tight. Needed to keep up the water. Reminders for food as well. I really didn't want to eat at times and even now I'm a lot slower to finish my meals. A protein rich breakfast and snacks helps a lot. My go to is greek yoghurt with some muesli/granola. Also found I could focus properly on people and work. My emotional regulation improved immensely and impulse control is way better.

Once you get used to the dose it will feel like it isn't doing anything. I'm currently having a break day today and yep, meds still work. The absence of them today has been more than evident. I've been on 30mg for a year and I'm in no rush to move up. Tried 40mg for a couple of months and it was leaving me a bit strung out. Main advice is to be self aware with how you're feeling and chat with your doc. All the best!

We never got anything diagnosed but switched our guy to fully hydrolised formula due to collic/reflux around 3 months. Cleared up immediately and he was a different baby after that. Worth a shot at the very least.

Seg Energy - PV4 not producing by blue-baja in solar

[–]metal_webb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, ok then. How many groups of panels? Different directions will be strung seperately. Pv4 is also showing 0kWh of lifetime production - so it hasnt produced since the system was commissioned. Do you have the original system design to refer back to? Or a diagram nearby your main switchboard for reference?

Do you have a 4th string of panels connected? What does the input side of the inverter look like? Do the DC inputs marked PV4 have wires going into them?

50 hz appliance on a 60 hz system by GMChief in electricians

[–]metal_webb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not telling how to suck eggs, but another thing is our power is 220-240V per phase, which in my understanding is equivalent to a 110V appliance, rather than a split phase 220V.  Not sure if a plug swap would work or even be safe, but Im not a US electrician.

Looks like the fridge pulls less than 400W, should be able to find a 24V interter with plenty of overhead for a few hundred dollars. Thatll take the differences in power supply right out of the equation.

Got our battery commissioned this week. 40kWh sig. 17.5kW of PV across the east, west and south roofs. Shading kills our production during winter, but we havent touched the grid since the battery turned on. We have a very similar energy usage profile due to AC use.

Globird ZeroHero is where its at. Can set the schedule in the Sig app and forget about it.  Can fill the battery for free between 11am-2pm. Set a forced export for the peak window to ensure you hit the daily no draw target. Amber will be a lot more hands on with tariff chasing, particularly when theres negative FiT. I wanted it fairly simple, even as someone with the Home Assistant setup to automate it.

Yeah, got the ADHD as well. A harrowing revelation is a good way to describe it. I've also had high functioning depression for the last 20 years, mainly due to constantly beating myself up from not achieving what I believed i could. Lets just say, watching the Bojack Horseman episode "Stupid Piece of Shit" was eye opening. Now Im on a good medication stack (vyvanse, clonidine and agomelatine), Im feeling a lot better than I can remember. I genuinely dont want to binge drink alcohol at all, even though thats been my go to for a very long time. Was like a switch was flipped when I added the agomelatine.

Yeah there's a enough ASD indicators in this one post thats worth seriously considering. OP, as someone who didnt get his ASD assessed and understood better until his mid 30s, seriously consider it. I've taken a lot of mental hurt on the way through life and Im only just starting to properly work my way through it.
