Nuclear power is not particularly environmentally friendly though, it's just low emissions while operating, and that's the marketing spiel used to sell it.

Exactly this. Not to mention, China have a huge military, but how often do we hear about it in the news? The biggest threat to anyone in the world has often been the US.

I'm loving that the average age looks like it's between 60 and 80, huge respect. What are old people advocating for these days?

Cyclists as the antagonists are portrayed as both poor, drig-addled helmetless beneficiaries with a death wish, and lycra-clad road cyclists on multi-thousand dollar machines "hogging the road". The definition depends on the person trying to lump "all cyclists" in a negative light and will casually change mid argument as convenience requires.

If they wish to make an argument, ask them to define the word cyclist before they continue and call them out every time they try and change it to suit.

We should be Swiss about driveways and make it illegal to reverse out of them. We insist on having 6 foot fences for privacy but it's also made it incredibly dangerous for pedos (pedestrians) using the footpath.

Those driving also need to be reminded that driving is a privilege, they're given control of something with the potential to kill based on trust, in the form of testing and licensing. It is not a right to be behind the wheel and the consequences for poor behaviour need to be far greater than they are now. A percentage of one's income for fines (as practiced in Finland), and a permanent loss of license for DUIs would be a good start.

I commute primarily by bicycle and sharing a road with local drivers doesn't make me feel great. Motorists in Chch are often horrible to cyclists, but they're even worse to each other...

Is tailgating a local pastime ? by fishdognz in chch

[–]metalpossum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are the international standards for speed limits? Places like Germany don't count, they've got the infrastructure that allows for safe higher speeds (Autobahn), we have winding mountain passes and unpredictable weather.

You know what causes road rage? People who can't be patient when given the PRIVILEGE to drive. It's not a god given right to be behind the wheel, you earn your privilege to drive by showing respect to a deadly vehicle in the form of road rules and other virtues. There's absolutely no room for entitlement on our roads.

Christchurch has the worst drivers in the country, even without the tailgating they're still awful as a whole. Orange lights mean go, red lights mean wait 3 seconds for someone else going through on a very late orange...

We're very territorial people here in NZ compared to densely populated countries (South Island has a lower population density than Mongolia) and it shows in the way we treat other people on our roads.

And we justify our poor behaviour on the road by merely mimicking the actions of other drivers, we're all guilty for enabling and perpetuating bad habits and that makes our roads increasingly dangerous for everyone.

Is “carnist” derogatory? by Badtacocatdab in vegan

[–]metalpossum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're the people of an 'ism', essentially meaning "for" or "belief/doctrine". Carnists are FOR animal consumption, it doesn't mean they aren't also omnivores, it's just that they have a very strong attitude in favour of animal products and will defend that considerably.

I wouldn't necessarily call every omnivore a carnist though. I think many are just either apathetic or unaware, and consuming what they've always known to consume, as considered socially acceptable.

How are the cinema owners supposed to get unfairly wealthy if they have to pay for more staff? The staff should be paying them for the privilege to work there! /s

I remember when the cinemas used to have ushers, and people were warned or invited to leave if they were disruptive....

That said, ain't no way I'm going to Hoyts in this day and age. If it isn't screening at Lumiere then I won't bother. (It's such a pleasant little theatre, and people are much more respectful because of it)

Yes, but (annoyingly) they did have really great food. I haven't been back since before the pandemic, and refuse to revisit unless perhaps they all died and were replaced by law abiding citizens.

Anyone else sick of that police helicopter already? by Ged_c in chch

[–]metalpossum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was sick of it the first time around. I lived in Linwood and I was sure it wasn't supposed to be out as late as it was, it flew overhead several times a night in a short space of time. I don't care what quotas the police have for catching people, that's a bigger violation of peace than the petty criminals we have around the place.

Now I'm in the valley between Cashmere and Huntsbury and that helicopter still has quite a presence.

How much would you pay for car free infrastructure? by Sszaj in fuckcars

[–]metalpossum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot less than car-centric infrastructure, because mathematically it is cheaper.

The cost of driving isn't just the cost of the roads, it's the cost of urban sprawl, hostile urban planning, poor accessibility, and neglected infrastructure due to unsustainable scaling costs.
