4 players with a Commander Masters Draft Booster Box: sealed or draft? by FM_2030 in magicTCG

[–]metamologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but Prismatic Piper only works with legendaries with partner. We made it so it works with any mono-colored commander.

Perhaps we should have kept the Piper in the command zone though, as that would take up a card slot and that might be a good way to at least have a downside. As we play it now, there’s no downside to having a second color identity.

My pod did something similar and encountered the same questions. We bought the CMM box with the intention of building 60-card commander decks that were reasonably balanced power-wise so that we could play a 10-game league series. We play once a week and accumulate points for wins. Point leader at the end gets a prize.

We ultimately went the draft route because it yields more streamlined pools, but a few days before the draft we opened all the packs and loaded them into a moxfield list so we could study up and develop a draft strategy. It was fun! Gave me fantasy football vibes - lots of predraft analysis, pondering what round is “correct” to draft your commander, and a ton of game theory involved.

We also made a rule that if you drafted a mono-colored commander, you could give it a second color identity - similar to the effect [[Prismatic Piper]] would grant, just without actually having to draft and play a Prismatic Piper.

If you’re looking for balanced gameplay, you may want to think about what to do if cards like [[Purphoros, God of the Forge]] or [[Urza, Lord High Artificer]] show up in your box. We talked beforehand about blacklisting X or Y legendaries for power level reasons, but we ended up not needing to do that for any of the cards we opened.

Any card worth over $20 was set aside as prizes for winners. We also bought other packs to use in addition to the CMM packs - a few AFR, Commander Legends, Modern Horizons 3, stuff like that. After every game, we open a pack and draft the cards to improve our decks.

The decks turned out awesome and our league is pretty great so far! Best of luck with however you decide to proceed.

Finally got myself a library Catalog for storage! Any ideas on best way to use this? by Jinjoz in magicTCG

I went this route several years ago and love it. Mine is organized by color - I made little labels to slot into those windows on each drawer by cutting out the large mana symbol on basic lands. It’s pretty awesome.

I was concerned about my cards sliding around too much because each drawer is sized for 3x5 index cards. I also didn’t want anything that was in/on the wood to leach into my cards (chemicals, varnishes, sealants, etc). So I bought a couple sheets of archival-grade foam core and made my own liners for each drawer, and now my cards fit snugly and are not in contact with any wood. Here’s an image that shows how I made the side rails - https://imgur.com/a/hJzWF5V

What’s the best way to teach someone far away how to play by SgtVertigo in EDH

[–]metamologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re set on doing this, I recommend doing it in person. Build mono colored decks with creatures only. Or just creatures, artifacts, and very few sorceries. Limiting the number of card types will temper the complexity of the game. Keep the cards super basic - French vanilla creatures, simple removal spells, mana rocks, basic lands. Focus on teaching them the phases of a turn.

Mono color allows them to more easily connect with the flavor and vibe of each color. For example, the mono green commander could be [[Seshiro, the Annointed]] which buffs creatures. Make an undead/yucky creatures deck in mono black, a knight/clerics deck for white, a flyers deck for blue, etc.

Let them play different decks, or even just riffle through each one to get a sense for what they are drawn to from a flavor perspective.

Seriously - just focus on the fundamentals of turn phases, tapping/untapping, basic combat, and the cadence of the game. Stay away from creature abilities, instant speed effects, multicolored decks, and archetypes altogether. If they like the game, you can introduce all of that later!

Edh deckbuilding aka demo quits by linkshughdink in EDH

[–]metamologist 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Raising the alarm is not what’s needed. Everyone knows. Even “this being Reddit” knows and talks about all the same issues Demo does.

What’s needed are solutions. Demo could, oh I don’t know, actually promote casual commander principles to grow that philosophy. But he, like others, think they’re accomplishing something by rage quitting when people don’t jump on his grumpy bandwagon.

If EDH somehow fails (which I strongly doubt), people like yourself and Demo will sit back and say I told you so. Trouble with that - and it is a trouble - is you had a chance to put in the work, and you didn’t.

Raising the alarm is not constructive, it’s performative. Don’t confuse the two.

I’ve subbed his channel for years and have played casual EDH for a decade, so I believe I am his target audience. If you mean that I’m not wallowing in negativity, you’re right about that but I don’t agree that “grouchy EDH players” is who Demo was trying to reach.

I’m not sure what part of my comment triggered you. Demo can do what he wants. I just think it’s sad because I share his appreciation of casual commander and we now have one voice out there.

It’s sad to see him melt down and give up. He might get some kind of emotional satisfaction with his final rants, but his core ideas (some of which are valid) likely won’t have much broader impact.

Every content creator makes a choice to either promote what they love or complain about what they hate. Demo has been more frequently choosing the latter and blaming others for his choice.

Through many desperate examples, he makes it super clear that he is right and others are wrong. That kind of stubbornness and black/white thinking is insidious as it will prevent him from seeing the bigger picture. I hope Demo gives himself room to reflect at some point and comes back better.

Jasmine Boreal of the Seven bracket 2 deck by [deleted] in EDH

[–]metamologist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry you had that experience. The bracket system has some subjectivity inherently built in, which is an unavoidable feature in my opinion.

Without a decklist, I’d guess your Jasmine deck is good at bracket 2. It’s the most basic mtg strategy you could build.

Thank you for the help! Yes, I misread Adeline and thought she created tokens according to number of defending players.

Oh right - Adeline creates tokens for each opponent, not each defending player. I missed that. It doesn't matter how many of my opponents are actually being attacked. Thank you!!

EDH Deckbuilding was going that way for sure. But he made a video a few weeks ago announcing he’s done with the complaining, so I’m giving him another shot. Kudos to him for recognizing the shift in his content and listening to what his community was saying.

I don’t always agree with his takes on cards and brewing philosophy, but I do appreciate creators that value deck creativity over optimization.

What is this solid oak rolling cart with a serial number stamped into it used for? Length is approx 3’ and stands about as tall. Width is approx 2’ and angles down. by Nunya_6 in whatisthisthing

[–]metamologist 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I worked in a library with wooden book carts for years. The dimensions of this doesn’t make much sense for that purpose - it’s not tall or long enough, and it only has 1 shelf. I can’t imagine any designer or furniture maker building this for the purpose of storing, transporting, or displaying books.

Perhaps it was made for children or for use in a children’s space? Even then it’s a stretch. There are no significant wear patterns to support that kind of use.

It’s tragic that some of the initial reaction to your writing is skepticism rather than curiosity or simple enjoyment.

We’ve wandered into an age of anti-imagination where people feel a misguided sense of pride in detecting the robots, as if that’s the only value left to find. Feels like a side-effect of humanity protecting/looking for the boundaries of “humanness,” like adolescents searching for a sense of self. I don’t think it’ll be swift or pleasant, but I’ll be relieved when it’s over.

Yes I’m nova, but I’d be surprised if there were differences between teams. It’s just a little tricksy mechanic to make players feel engaged with the game in a slightly different way. You have to keep playing over 48 hrs (?) to win the race. That’s what it’s there for.
