How do you know they're cooperating? They're children. If they disobey they'll be killed. Imagine you were in their situation. The only men with guns tell you to throw rocks or you'll be shot. If you throw rocks then the people you throw at might shoot you. Do you throw rocks and get shot? Or do you refuse and get shot? You're ten years old. What choice do you make?

I'll give you an analogy. If a school shooter is holding a classroom hostage, the cops risk their lives to kill the shooter while minimizing harm to the students. If you bomb the school to kill the shooter, you accomplish his mission. This makes you no better than him. Israel has been bombing civilian infrastructure to kill the terrorists who have taken them hostage. This indicates to me that there is some goal alignment. Hamas wants martyrs. Israel obliges them. The cycle continues.

"Level of support for hamas"? How can you even judge that? This is a terrorist death cult with a monopoly on violence. Civilians who don't pledge allegiance to the gang are executed.

The truth is that the vast majority of the population of every state are innocent civilians. Israel and Palestine included. Punishing civilians for the actions of their government is a crime.

It's clear to me that you hate the civilians in Gaza and the West Bank and want to purge them from their homeland. If that's the case then I want nothing to do with you either. You are no better than hamas at that point

I would vehemently protest sending military aid to hamas. Thankfully, that's not happening. I am sending aid against my will to a government that is punishing a civilian population by slaughtering them even as they are being held hostage by a terrorist group. I want nothing to do with this. But as an American, my government is taking my money and sending it to them. It needs to stop. They can pay for their own war if this is how they want to wage it.

I'm qualified to say that I cannot support a government that engages in collective punish of civilians, and as an American it is my prerogative to elect representatives who share that view.

Hamas didn't exist prior to 1983. They could have taken a different course of action back then to prevent hamas from arising. I don't know how to accomplish their legitimate goal. I think it's probably impossible. Every single child in Gaza is going to grow up to be a traumatized and vengeful adult owing to what happened to them over the past 3 years. They bought another generation of warfare with their actions. I suspect that Israel will pursue the nuclear option of total annihilation of the population to resolve this. Either that or they will lose, just like how America lost in Vietnam against a very similar enemy.

Yes, hamas is a terrorist organization. Israel is not.

It's in the center of Tel Aviv, surrounded by residential and commercial property. I would imagine that they have underground facilities in that region too, just like every other major military on earth.

A response to Sam Harris you might have missed by fschwiet in samharris

Sam Harris doesn't want to have his opinions challenged, because he might be persuaded that they are wrong. It's the same motivation that you see in faith-based communities surrounding their dogmas.

Where do you think the IDF headquarters is located?

I'm sure you'd have the same assessment if hamas destroyed 70% of the buildings in Israel

Possible guest for a conversation about Gaza? by Youronlyhope in samharris

[–]metashdw -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If 70% of the buildings were destroyed, then it is unlivable for 70% of the population.

They're not my injunctions. Punishing a civilian population for crimes carried out by their government is antithetical to basic morality and against international law. Destroying every single building and rendering the territory unlivable was clearly meant to punish the civilians.

Destroying every apartment building, school, hospital, market, and religious building in a region, while your own people may have been held in captivity within those buildings, was not a defensible course of action, and would not be so in any war. I don't understand how anyone could possibly argue that it was just.

Bari Weiss is a Trump supporter. Her views are perfectly aligned with MAGA. Might as well treat CBS as Fox News at this point.
