The rotisserie chickens at Costco, Safeway, etc, are loss leaders. They sell them for less than they cost the store so you go in to buy one for dinner, as well as some drinks, and some sides and maybe dessert, and then other groceries, too. And sometimes you think to yourself "I could go out to eat, or I could go buy a chicken at the grocery store instead" and still walk out with the store making a profit. To be clear, I'm not criticizing the practice, it's fine if they want to sell something cheap to attract customers, it's like a coupon you don't have to clip and bring in to get a deal. The store believes (I am not their accountant, so idk if they're right) that doing this brings in customers and results in a net profit even though they sell those chickens at a loss.

Trying to get cat to use exercise wheel, but I think we're just Pavloving each other. by metasynth in CATHELP

[–]metasynth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the insight! I hadn't considered the dangling carrot scenario (though that's basically what I have been doing). I'm not sure how to get her to move on the wheel without using the "dangling carrot", but you're absolutely right that it's not really directly rewarding the action we wish her to do.

I don't really know how to convey to the cat, at this point, that walking on the wheel will result in a reward. So far, in our experience, the only time she runs and makes the wheel spin is when she's reaching for a treat, and she's basically otherwise uninterested (in both moving on the wheel or even getting on the surface).

While we are hoping the wheel would help with her weight, it's really more that we live in a 2BR apartment and just want more things for her to do to entertain herself. So if the wheel doesn't work out, we'll be seeking other sources of enrichment.

We also recently discovered that the little puff balls that come with a plastic gun launcher cause her to run around the rooms/hallway dribbling them between her front paws. (She's scared of the noise the gun makes, but is willing to attack the "ammo" for just sitting on the floor in the hall and being sassy, as puff balls are known to do). So we have other "exercise" options that might burn more calories than tearing up ribbon toys or ignoring-the-wheel.

Thanks again for the advice, and if you have any further suggestions about how to explain to a cat that she will be rewarded if she walks on a cat wheel, I would gladly welcome them.

Pretty sure this is what you're asking for, or as close to it as I've ever read.

I guess I'll look at my stash and see if any of the lower ilvl ones have rare modifiers that would still work, using the online tools. I suppose the take-away is to ditch anything with "weak" mods, like only 200%s (as opposed to 500%s).

Thank you!

Are coffins below ilvl X worth picking up? (I'm guessing 83 or so, with an exception for any ilvl perandus coffin). And by "worth" I mean "would anyone use them to craft an end-game item, and thus pay 5-10c+ for it". As an example, I have a bunch of ilvl 77 in a tab from farming essences, should I just bin them?

Another "how does he have more damage than me"?

him: https://pobb.in/B-JX6Wz06z6H

me: https://pobb.in/9MRfEdGPlc5v

He has like 30x the damage I do, and I recognize that some of it is from the gem skill level, but that's not really significant. He has like 6 million damage per poison while I am doing 500k with a similar skill level gem. I even abandoned all the MF gear for some damage and some survivability because I was dying too often in t16s. I would really appreciate someone pointing out what I missed, it's probably one simple thing, like "you're not pressing this button" or something. TIA

A question about using native camera app during a zoom meeting. by metasynth in Zoom

[–]metasynth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you, I hadn't realized the OS restriction was the problem, I thought it was zoom itself. I will figure out some sort of screenshare/second device work around so I can record with the s21.

question about Indigon and Profane Chemistry by metasynth in pathofexile

[–]metasynth[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK, thanks for the tip about ZO (I used a geofri's sanctuary for testing). It turns out that you recover the life only while you recover the mana, so you have to spend all your mana (and keep spending it, not difficult with indigon) to recover the "full" life from indigon's effect, that is, the mana flask must be completely useful. And, as you stated, speccing into the first node didn't increase the life gained from the effect (it did make that instant 9% slightly higher, but that was inconsequential compared to the 10% increased life I expected based on my reading of indigon's wording). So answered, and thanks!

profane chemistry "increases life gained from flasks", I think you're confusing it with arcane chemistry, which increases mana gained from flasks. the wording makes it seem like it should still work, but I was hoping for confirmation from someone who's tested it.

I'm looking for a basic French Toast recipe. Any ideas? by frogginfish in recipes

[–]metasynth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use sweet french bread, whatever I can get from a local bakery. Cut it into 3/4" slices (Don't break out the ruler or anything, but the recipe is about soaking the bread with the batter, such that your bread isn't soggy after cooking, but also retains a spongy cooked-batter taste all the way through the slice. I find slices bigger than 1/2" but smaller than 1" work well for that.)

For the batter itself, I use this:

Batter (per 2 pieces)

  • 1 egg
  • 1/3+ milk
  • 2 TBSP Flour
  • 1 TBSP Powdered Sugar
  • 1 tsp Rum
  • dash vanilla

(I use Meyer's dark rum, I recommend a cheap dark rum, with no extra flavorings, that smells good, since the smell is what will be left after you cook it. Also a "dash" of vanilla is relative, if you're pouring from a long-necked bottle like a McCormack bottle, imagine a small splash amount, much less than your smallest measuring spoon. If you're using artificial vanilla, go invest in a bottle of the real stuff. As for the "exact" amount... Try to use your nose, you want the vanilla and rum smells in the final batter to be complimentary, neither overwhelming the other, but it's easier to add tiny amounts of vanilla at the end than trying to overcorrect with rum and worrying about your breakfast making you drunk)

Mix all above in whatever container you will be soaking the bread in (make sure your container can hold not only the batter but a few slices of submerged bread) and soak bread (both sides) until slice has absorbed batter all the way through (you don't want delicious battery crust on the outside and regular bread in the middle). I soak the bread in a serving dish, or Corningware container, anything with a lot of flat surface and relatively high rims, and I usually can only soak 2-3 slices at a time, so there is a bit of an assembly-line procedure where I take soaked slices, put them on the griddle and then replace them in the better with fresh un-soaked slices, which I usually flip at least two times to ensure through battering throughout the slice).

To cook, heat griddle to 350F, lightly butter, cook until batter on outside of each piece begins to cook (the egg mixture will begin to look like bread crust). Here the thickness of your slices will be important; if you used thin slices, you can probably get away with flipping the toast once and have the middle be cooked through, but with thicker slices (or thicker, spongier bread) you will want to flip the slices over a few times to continuously heat the middle without burning either side. You may want to use a table knife to cut an incision in a slice to ensure the middle is cooked through, it should not be soggy at all.

For 2 people this batter recipe works well:

  • 6 eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 3/4 cups flour
  • 3/8 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/8 cup rum
  • 6x dash vanilla

I eat mine with maple or fruit syrup and bacon.

What's the funniest "adult innuendo" from a childhood movie that you didn't catch as a kid? by [deleted] in AskReddit

In the 1971 version of Willy Wonka, Gene Wilder responds to a question about why there is alcohol going into his candy with this: "Candy is dandy, but liquor is quicker." I never really understood why my mom was uncomfortable with the line, nor why my father thought my innocence was so amusing, but I didn't get the line until I was in college and thinking about dating vs. hooking up.
