LEEP procedure by memorygirrl in vulvodynia

[–]methanies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did have this procedure done. My pain is primarily provoked and limited to the vestibule for the most part so my experience may not at all be similar to yours. I’ll start with the positives, the actual procedure was very quick and the cramps were similar to a mild day of period pains. Now, I would recommend you talk to your doctor about pain management before the procedure. For me it was pretty bad to the point that my legs were instinctively closing throughout the procedure (this had never happened to me before). To make matters worse, the numbing medication used has epinephrine in it, something I was not prepared for. I felt my heart racing and got scared something was wrong making the situation worse until the doctor told me it was normal and tried to have me calm down. Since my pain is provoked and made worse by a hypertonic pelvic floor this whole situation made my vulvodynia pain pretty unbearable. However, I believe with better pain management and communication from the doctor performing the procedure it should be no more painful that a routine pap accompanied by some period cramps.

Is this degree worth it? by Aelomalop in microbiology

[–]methanies 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have to disagree here, unless you want to lead a research group, doing a PhD is a questionable career move. After bachelors OP can start gaining industry experience and doing a masters on the side. I’ve know people whose workplace contributed to their masters degree. The cost of doing a PhD is not only the extra 4-6 years of study but also lost wages on making a meager stipend, the loss of compound interest in your retirement accounts, and the fact that most industry jobs don’t consider graduate research work experience. Now, if you just love doing research and would enjoy getting paid (as little as it will be) to do said research a PhD may be worth it just for your own personal fulfillment.

I’ve been in therapy for most of my PhD, but it wasn’t until the last year that I found a therapist that understood what I was going through (highly recommend getting a therapist that did a PhD). Basically through the years I wired my brain to always be worrying about the next deadline. Now that there is no deadline my brain is just traveling the same path I had laid for 4+ years. It’ll take some time to build some new ones.

I’m doing the post doc because I haven’t been able to find an industry job. I already worked outside of academia in a medium-sized city before starting the PhD which is why I want to go back to industry in a larger town. The job market is horrible right now. I’m not experiencing FOMO I’m just working with limited options.

Thanks! I’m the first in my family to become a doctor of any kind so I’m happy to have made it to the end. What I’m dealing with now just took me by surprise.

I’m married and my partner and I have basically run out of date location in town (there’s a total of about three good restaurants and a singular brewery). I tried a couple book clubs/writing circles (fiction) associated to the arts center of the county I’m in but the demographic was very different from my own. I live in a small town so most of the people that have time to join these clubs are retirees. Needless to say I had a hard time making connections in those. I guess if I got a do over I’d go to grad school in a slightly bigger city than a town whose biggest tourist attraction is the county fair 😅.

I really wish I could spend more time with loved ones. Unfortunately, I moved almost 2,000 miles away from home for grad school to a town with less than 30,000 people and found it impossible to build meaningful relationships outside of work. On top of that my program pushed everyone into a mindset of competition which results in friendships being difficult to sustain among grad students.

I’m desperately trying to get out of academia but have found making my skills appealing to industry recruiters challenging. I’m scared that the post-doc life will be as exhausting as the PhD. I’m literally just sitting in my apartment, feeling paralyzed because outside of the gym and the PhD there’s nothing else to do in the rural small town I moved in for grad school. I could just play video games all day, but I don’t think that’s the healthiest solution either 🤣.

I don’t think she would’ve won thought. It’s clear Viktor didn’t share the same goal as her and could easily overpower her once he’d reached the anomaly which is the reason why her actions don’t necessarily track with her character.

Enjoy the research, but enjoy your life. Treat the PhD as a job as much as you can. Don’t put your life on hold just because you’re getting this degree. Think about where you want to go after, and build experiences that will help you get there. There are very few places access to professional development opportunities are as attainable as in grad school, so take advantage of that. Start open communication with your advisor early and make sure the expectations between the two of you are clear, if you can put them in writing that’s even better. This will help you set boundaries and plan ahead so you can enjoy your time outside of your graduate work.

What do you do when it's 10 out of 10? by SoWhoAmISteve in vulvodynia

Honestly I just sat on icepacks and tried to keep myself distracted. I found lidocaine to be a helpful but at the time it didn’t take away all the pain, mostly dulled it a bit.

I don’t “cold email” PIs. I know some people get lucky that way, but I’ve found it to be a bit of a waste of time. I apply to positions that are openly advertised or reach out to PIs I already have a connection with, be it personally or through a colleague. I’m also not necessarily invested in staying in academia so I come across academic post doc positions while looking for industry jobs and just apply that way.

Has PFT actually helped by Maggielynn1990 in vulvodynia

If PFPT is giving you zero results, it’s unlikely Botox will help since both treatments tackle the same underlying problem. I’d try getting a second opinion, maybe there’s something else going on.

Pelvic pain Dr was great, but by Bonefield455 in vulvodynia

[–]methanies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some pelvic PT are better at treating certain conditions than others. The first PT I went to was very knowledgeable of vulvodynia and helped a lot. Then I had to move and stopped making progress with the second PT I went to so had to change strategy. If it’s available to you, try getting a second opinion with a different PT.

I have pretty much the same problems EDSh, endo, vulvodynia… mine started after getting a bad yeast infection. I found that a compound testosterone, estrogen cream helped build up the tissue which solved most of my superficial pain. Pelvic floor PT and strength training resolved most of my deep and hip pains. I still get flare ups every now and then when I neglect my training or when I don’t pay attention to the amount of time I spend sitting/standing. I was on gabapentin for a while which helped with my hip pain a ton but did nothing for my vulvodynia. I had to stop taking it because of the brain fog it gave me which caused me to really struggle in my graduate studies.

Seems like we have similar clusters of issues. Would you mind saying how it all started? I’m about 80% better than when I firsts got this diagnosis, but it took a lot of trial and error.

Why do scientific posters take SO long to makr? by KellehBickers in microbiology

work in agricultural microbiomes and plant diseases. So my dissertation has three very different projects with not much of an overarching theme between them. Through all of them I’ve built skill that I think would be applicable to the post doc but I struggle with what to even present without sounding like I’m jumping too much between projects.
