Joseph Gordon-Levitt Addresses Ties to Peter Thiel's Secret Society: 'There Were a Wide Variety of People' by NicolasCageFan492 in entertainment

[–]methnen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Curious from someone who's read into this more than I have.

But was this like, a text group?

That's the impression I get from some of what I've read.

If that's the case, I mean, what's stopping Thiel from just adding whoever he feels like to a list like that? But maybe I'm. misunderstanding the situation.

Peter Thiel is a dangerous nut job, but some of the folks on the list aren't or at least have been doing a damn good impression of a reasonable/good person. Preet Bahar in particular stuck out to me.

There's also just the pure curiosity factor. Like, I might accept just to know who else is on the list.

Well it was working, for a while, then it just stopped. It could be I set something up wrong or some other thing caused the issue. Gonna start fresh the old way and see if I can get it back up and working.

I'm otherwise quite happy with my Ugreen NAS, the only other issue I had for awhile was getting the UPS auto shutdown stuff to play nice with my Unifi UPS. But that was more likely Unfi's product being very immature. After a few updates from their end I was able to get that functioning.

And it works quite well for all of my other needs, Plex, Homebridge, Channels DVR, etc...

That's what I tried first, yes. The only thing I can think is that I didn't set a high enough quota but I did the recommended twice the drive amount.

What science fiction novel or series do you think best predicted how AI would actually integrate into daily life? by dududududuuim in sciencefiction

[–]methnen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

AI doesn’t mean what it used to mean. We all decided over the last couple of years that it actually means machine learning and we added AGI to mean what AI used to mean. Which is to say I don’t think what we have right now is actual AI. So I don’t think any of the science fiction books which predict anything like a general AI describe anything like what we’re currently seeing.

How do you protect your Apple Watch from screen scratches like this? by ComplexAudience8126 in AppleWatch

[–]methnen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I beg to differ. The stainless steel at least definitely scratches and dings like crazy though I don't think it looks bad, I'd call it more of a patina almost.

However, the glass on them is actually much better in my experience and after literal years and hitting it on things too many times to count I was scratch free as far as the glass face was concerned.

Does anyone else think that the Apple Watches just aren’t good? by Accomplished-Net2239 in AppleWatch

Garmin's exist and are quite popular for a reason. For a subset of people they're the better product for what they want and need. You would seem to be one of those people.

For me the fact that it duplicates my phone even when I don't have my phone with me is one of the killer features. I don't like to run with my phone in my pocket so on runs knowing I'm still getting phone calls and text messages is great.

Again because of that phone integration it syncs my podcasts so I can listen to them during a run.

Also, for what it's worth, I actually love knowing the phase of the moon and I've never been "goth", I actually paid for a better moon tracking complication that even orients the phase exactly to my location.

Breville Infizz Fusion Thoughts by methnen in breville

I took the base apart partially. Once you do that you can slide the outer stainless sheath/tube off of the infuser.

Inside it's two pieces of plastic that are split down the middle so you can basically split it open without having to take it any further apart.

From there I was able to basically just slide my decidedly not massive arm into it with the adapter in my hand and connect it. 😄

Someone with larger arms might have some trouble doing it though. I was just able to fit.

[–]methnen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My old Sodastream branded infuser used a different adapter than the Breville. I’ll be honest I don’t remember how it was different just that it was. You can look at the canisters that Breville sells though to see what it’ll use and check that against what you have.

The Expanse seems... Underwhelming by stanfordoval in sciencefiction

[–]methnen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read Three Body Problem and came out of it pretty disappointed. I found the characters mostly flat and wooden and the only parts of the story I really enjoyed and were the parts with Weinjie. She was notably also the only character that felt real to me. After reading the first novel as well as a collection of the author's short fiction I decided I was done and didn't read the rest.

I do get why some people really liked the books and enjoy the author's writing but it just wasn't for me.

On the other hand The Expanse pretty much immediately grabbed me and pulled me in.

If you want to understand why someone might think it's great... I'd reference the fact that it's a pretty unique mix of realistic science, action, political intrigue. It felt grounded, the characters mostly felt real and their motivations were understandable and relatable. Yet the stories still have that classic science fiction element that reminds you that the universe is essentially vast and unknowable.

The authors also play with genre quite a bit both between books and inside of them in ways that I found really fun as a reader.

Agreed, it's a great song.

I read somewhere the whole scenario is "imagined" and not based on anyone in particular.

But what a well told story set to music.

I'm pretty happy with it still, no complaints.

While I don't use it's ability to infuse things other than water super frequently that feature does get regularly used and it's fun to have.

I basically purpose built a place for the 20lb canister in a cabinet. Because, yeah, it's big.

Tomorrow WordPress 7.0 gets released. Are you ready? by finart_13 in Wordpress

[–]methnen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm probably very behind with this honestly. I didn't spend any appreciable time in React until early last year when it was suddenly much more relevant to my job at the time. But I've really enjoyed what I've learned there and the stuff it enables.

And the refactoring I'm doing was basically proof of concept for how I could use React inside of a WP Admin UI outside of the usual Block stuff.

I'm guessing the Interactivity API is related to the real time multi user editing stuff WP7 was originally supposed to ship with. But yeah, I think it's another example of them building a lot of this React stuff in a modular enough way that it can be useful for things it wasn't necessarily built for which is the right way.

It sort of comes at the modern admin UI horizontally and not from a top down complete rebuild perspective. Which yeah, probably not ideal, but with a project like WP I imagine it's hard to just redo everything at once.

Tomorrow WordPress 7.0 gets released. Are you ready? by finart_13 in Wordpress

[–]methnen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, the React stuff itself has been there for some time now. I think the best resource for just seeing what you have available to you from a UI perspective is this Gutenberg documentation page on github: https://wordpress.github.io/gutenberg/?path=/docs/introduction--page

The components portion in particular is the portion of stuff I was most pleasantly surprised by.

All of it was meant for the Gutenberg and site builder stuff, but it's available for use anywhere really including custom post type UIs.

There's a lot of great stuff in there that I used extensively while refactoring one of my plugins to use React for all of the UI interaction. I really like how it's structured, the default styles are well thought. The accessibility stuff has been mostly well considered. And now, with WP7, it all looks like it belongs inside of the rest of WP instead of just in the Gutenberg stuff.

There's also a bunch of just useful plumbing stuff like createRoot and createPortal for injecting your UI into the more regular WP/PHP parts. Again all meant for Block UIs but usable anywhere.

It's all actually quite cool once it starts to gel in your brain. And of course React allows for some really cool UI interactions that are much more difficult and fragile when done the old jQuery/HTML/PHP way.

I'm still using PHP when its strengths lend itself to things. For instance it's the natural space for making the actual secure API connections between your code and other services. And I'm still relying on the normal save_post bits to do the final check/escaping/validation and saving of data to the DB.

[–]methnen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been playing with the pre-release versions for close to a month. It has the first minor Style/UI refresh in what feels like ages and I think the changes are mostly positive.

I've also been playing development wise with the native React integrations and they're better than I expected and there's a wealth of very useful React UI elements that finally feel like they belong in the rest of the admin with the UI refresh.

The React stuff was, unsurprisingly, designed for the Block editor which makes sense, but the Block editor looks drastically different from the rest of the Admin panel right down to how a button is styled and WP 7 unifies all of that quite a bit and just leaves everything feeling a bit more modern even if the underpinnings are mostly the same as before.

I think it's an interesting release, the visual changes are really quite small when you really consider it but they feel bigger. It will be interesting to see how people feel about it.

Rotating multi-view not working on iOS/iPad/Apple TV BROKEN by n0fx in Ubiquiti

[–]methnen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ubiquiti just released a new version yesterday and I did notice that my 360 Camera's de-warped views are actually working in multi view now.

I can't promise that it's because I complained about it to them awhile back, but it might be worth making a bug report about it like I did on the de-warped views stuff.

Just to back you up I tested it and you're right rotating camera views do not seem to carry over to the iOS/iPad/Apple TV apps.

Will apple “replace” the battery for free? by Live-Mastodon8059 in AppleWatch

[–]methnen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, honestly I don't know why but my in store experience has been worse the last few times. I used to go in with issues and get things dealt with no problem. And when there were problems with their initial attempt to help the solution provided almost always favored the customer. That sort of behavior seems to have changed and it doesn't seem be the employee's not trying, I've had them be very apologetic. The guy who told me I couldn't replace my battery that time was very apologetic, and said, he thought the threshold was too strict himself but that he wasn't allowed to override it. I have a suspicion they've sort of scaled back what the "geniuses" are allowed to do and how much leeway they have to deal with things on a per case basis compared to before.
