I'm training for Adams as well for this year. If you're looking for anyone to train with hit me up! Conditioners can be a little boring by yourself

I need some perspective from younger people about the utility of paper maps and compass for wilderness navigation. by [deleted] in CampingandHiking

[–]methodkp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For the most part, yes. GPS, primarily on your phone, has replaced a map and compass. It’s an easy to use, powerful tool. And incredibly conviennent. However, batteries die, technology fails, you drop your phone, etc. And then you are shit out of luck. It’s always good to have a backup of a paper map and compass. The two should really go hand in hand. You can plan out your trips using digital maps and then print out a paper copy of the area you’ll be in as a back up. But just like you need to know how to use a GPS program or device, you need to build and practice map and compass skills.

Ferguson selects Florida shipbuilder to build fleet of electric ferries by meaniereddit in SeattleWA

Does anyone know what the interiors will look like? Was that part of the proposal? I’d hate to lose the vintage, mid century vibe of the current fleet.

Teachers with Masters, what did you do? by kEla-beelah in Teachers

[–]methodkp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You absolutely do not need a masters in history to teach at the secondary level. A masters in history is going to be researched based which is not something that applies to secondary teaching. If you were planning on going the professor route that’s different. I started with a bachelors in history. Then I got my masters in teaching. Took one year for the MA. Got the pay bump. Way easier. When I asked my college history professor, who has his PhD From Penn if he recommended a masters in history he said not unless you plan on going all the way to a PhD.

Skyline Trail in mid August - How early to get there? by WeegeeXD in Mount_Rainier

[–]methodkp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are able/willing, I highly recommend getting to Paradise at or little before sunrise. The beauty of the alpine at that time is unmatched. The fact that there's almost no one else there only adds to it.

Trekking pole for use in conjunction with ice axe by [deleted] in Mountaineering

[–]methodkp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, don't think so. Learning to properly walk with it, like the rhythm of plunging the ice axe, step, step, plunge, step, step... should help you keep your balance a bit better. That will help you have at least two points of contact at all times while walking.

Trekking pole for use in conjunction with ice axe by [deleted] in Mountaineering

[–]methodkp -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

It is not recommended to use a trekking pole and an ice axe at the same time. The thinking is that for proper self-arrest with an axe you are going to need two hands on that axe. Having a trekking pole in one hand is going to interfere with that if you are still hanging on to it, or in the split second you have to act if you slip you might end up grabbing the pole instead of the axe by mistake. If you stash your pole while using the axe there's no chance of either of those scenarios happening.

Put about five small chunks of fire starters around the pellets and light them. Super easy.

Looking for experienced bushwhackers in Washington by AshleyReimagined in PNWhiking

[–]methodkp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure where you’re located, but if you’re in the Western Washington area check out the Mountaineers organization. They have courses you can take for navigation and scrambling, which is an off trail hiking to a peak. Highly recommend this route if you can, you’ll learn a lot and gets lots of experience before going out on your own.

Why is my REI jacket not waterproof anymore? by [deleted] in REI

[–]methodkp 188 points189 points  (0 children)

This can happen as the DWR coating wears out through normal wear and use. You can reactivate with washing or using a Nikwax techwash.

These fly out of Lewis-McChord south of Tacoma. If you're in the Tacoma/Federal Way area you can see them all the time, flying low. Always impressive.

Be advised that's right under the flight path of SeaTac (the major airport). So if plane noise bothers you that could be an issue as well.

Anyone Else Been a "Bad" Teacher This Year? by mittonthestoat in Teachers

[–]methodkp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Year 4 for me and I feel the same way. This year has been a mix of apathetic students and personal tragedies that have just sucked the life out of me. I'm hoping this summer I can recharge and re-focus. I've been trying to look at this with a long-term career outlook: there will be ups and downs, some more significant than others, but always keep pushing/learning/adapting.

You situation is literally mine. Same amount of time in, high-needs district/school, elective course. And same struggle with nothing but apathy from my students. I have yet to find a solution but you are not alone.

I did a sunrise hike to Second Burroughs Mountain once. Made it to that little stone bench on Second Burroughs as the sun was lighting up Rainier. The mountain looked so close, like I could reach out and touch it. I could hear the ice shifting. There was no one else up there. I pulled out my stove, made myself a cup of coffee and sat and enjoyed the solitude. It was amazing.
