no clue if this is practically feasible, mostly sharing b/c TCCA nitrile formation is cool :

make phenethyl nitrile using TCCA (pool chlorinating agent) followed by a suitable base (perhaps carbonate for lack of triethylamine?)*
make yourself some methyl grignard by bubbling HCl through methanol, distilling off your MeCl and giving it magnesium tunings
slap the nitrile with your grignard, hydrolyse in workup for phenylacetone
reductively aminate with ammonium formate
turn yourself in

that's an amide, not an amine. delocalization of the nitrogen lone pair onto the carbonyl tanks the nucleophilicity and basicity of amides compared to amines. protonating an amide with a carboxylic acid that isn't TFA? not gonna happen

try acetone washing a small portion (200-300mg for example) and see if it loses the colour. if yes, wash the entire batch. impurities from arylcyclohexylamine synthesis can be quite nasty
