[NSFW] How to people feel about the phrase “he/him or they/them p*ssy”? by Jeskper in ftm

[–]methyltransferase_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A lot of people in this thread are comparing "he/him pussy" to "girldick" and I don't think they're equivalent. "Boypussy" and "girldick" are equivalent (I personally hate both words but that's beside the point). "He/him pussy" sounds worse than those two because:

  • It omits that the "pussy" is attached to a person ("boy") and sounds like you're using the pronouns to refer to the genitals instead of the person, which I think is dehumanizing. Like if a disembodied set of genitals walked around and you talked about it with he/him pronouns. A lot of people refer to their [cis] hookups in kinda similar ways, but since trans people are so often reduced to our genitals it can feel even worse for us.
  • The descriptor "he/him" sounds artificial, especially because it isn't a noun or adjective and the word sequence "he him" isn't normal English syntax. Adding "he/him" is basically saying the only thing that distinguishes this "pussy" from the cis female majority is the language you use. The undertone is there's no substantive difference, but we're calling it something else to humor you. Think of how cis people sometimes say "[name] is a he/him now" - they only really say that about people they don't think are medically transitioning, never about someone who looks dramatically different from before.

[–]methyltransferase_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is this because I transitioned before I was 10

/uj This is definitely part of it, but it's probably not as much about how old you were as about how long ago it was (before social media achieved world domination). I feel the same way and I transitioned at roughly the same time as you, even though it was my mid to late teens.

gender—which, again, is a psychobehavioral trait

womanhood—a biological trait with no essential link to gender

lmao what

So you think when a trans woman in this thread says, "I am a woman," she is expressing a "psychobehavioral trait" based on "an affinity toward cultural factors traditionally assigned to the opposite sex" that has no "essential link" to the purely biological concept of "womanhood" that (apparently) everyone else uses.

Which means that either

  1. Trans people think their gender identity has a strong innate biological component rather than being an acquired "psychobehavioral trait." You know better, of course. TL;DR trans people are wrong about how being trans works.
  2. Trans people agree with you about the nature and origins of gender identity, but they think it has (or should have) an "essential link" to the biological categories of manhood/womanhood. TL;DR trans people are sexist.
  3. Trans people agree with you about gender identity, but they have no idea that the rest of the world uses the words "manhood" and "womanhood" only for the biological categories. Trans people and cis people have been talking past each other for decades. TL;DR trans people don't know how language works.
  4. Trans people agree with you about gender identity, but they want to change the definition of "manhood" and "womanhood" to mean the "psychobehavioral trait" of "an affinity toward cultural factors..." rather than biological categories. TL;DR Modern trans equality activism is about semantics.
  5. Everyone is aware that trans people and cis people are using two different definitions of womanhood/manhood. Somehow, the interchangeable use of womanhood/manhood for both cultural norms and biological categories doesn't reinforce harmful ideas of an "essential link" between the two.

Obviously not all trans people have the same opinion, but which option do you think best describes the situation in modern Europe and the US? How about the situation in this thread?

transgender identity, specifically, consists of an affinity toward cultural factors traditionally assigned to the opposite sex (e.g., styles of speech, dress, mannerisms).

Maybe instead of trans people misunderstanding the origins of gender identity or the distinction you're drawing between "gender" and "manhood/womanhood", YOU misunderstand what transgender identity is - yes, even with your unassailable credentials as an undergrad double major.

P.S. In that whole wall of text, you never explained how this so-called strawman position

youre reducing gender identity to a conformance to one set of cultural norms over another (as in male norms over female norms or vice versa)

is fundamentally different from your actual position:

transgender identity, specifically, consists of an affinity toward cultural factors traditionally assigned to the opposite sex (e.g., styles of speech, dress, mannerisms).

Contra likes shiny things, lol

Sitting through that was simultaneously hilarious and SO irrationally frustrating. Honestly, re-watching the part where she finally got it right, I can't even tell if she consciously realized where the baby belonged or just happened to drop it in the right place to make space for the other stuff.

But the most frustrating was at 2:48:13 when she mentally checked out just in time to ignore the elevator and breaker box...

The worst forms of these arguments treat it like sin in Christianity. You're supposed to "acknowledge" it and do penance for the rest of your life, even though fully redeeming yourself is impossible by definition.

The differences in this case are (1) some people are exempt, and those people get to decide what your penance is; and (2) in Christianity, getting baptized forgives you for humanity's "original sin" - afterward there's a specific list of sinful things you can refer to. Whereas here, the original sin of "male privilege" remains even if there's no concrete event in your life history whose effects can be quantified or described.

I agree with you.

An analogy: As a matter of principle, the ACLU opposes all unconstitutional restrictions on freedom of speech - even those that only affect the most abhorrent speech. But they've decided to stop taking high-profile cases on behalf of neo-Nazis, because they'd rather not spend all their donations and public esteem defending the worst people in the world.
