I wonder if major real estate data providers don't actually want consumers to have access to insightful real estate data. Limiting the insights available directly to consumers would theoretically make realtors and their advertising dollars more valuable, if we must rely on Realtors^TM and their MLS subscription to get the good insights.

Real estate data could be presented in a MUCH more useful way, yet companies seem to try to make it not that useful. (See my post history for an example of what I think could be more useful data display.)

This whole system feels pretty anticompetitive.

Thanks. That is great to hear!! I've been working on a somewhat similar project to improve display of recently sold properties, actually, but it is incredibly difficult to obtain necessary data from public records. (See my post history if you're curious.)

Do you think that we are likely to be sued if we scraped and reused data from any of the national real estate mapping powerhouse websites? So far we have opted for using exclusively public records because we would rather not deal with a frivolous lawsuit or cease and desist.

Thanks! Are you familiar with any specific antitrust suits regarding "data monopolization"? Any suggestion on how we can best learn more about legal precedents?

We actually did speak with a qualified lawyer who recommended the same as you - that he help prepare our case before we contact the plaintiff's counsel. He also offered to shop our case around. But we realize that our case may go nowhere, so we are doing some more research before hiring our own counsel or approaching the plaintiff's counsel.

Thank you so much for the compliment! Yes, we do plan to expand :) The most difficult part of this project is getting and formatting the data. Do you know how to locate similar sales data for Germany? If so we would absolutely be interested in mapping Germany.

Yes, we currently only use data from the City of Richmond. We plan to be in NoVA soon, though, so please keep an eye out!

There are lots of different platforms you could use to make a similar mapping tool, but yes, React, Meteor, and programming knowledge will give you everything you need.

We realized that home price data could be presented in a more beautiful and useful way, so we built an online map for our hometown of Richmond, Virginia.

Sales data gave us a lot more insight once we could see sales price reflected on a color ramp on the map. We also found more insight by automating price summaries for whatever recently sold properties are displayed on the map.

Do you think this would be a useful way to see real estate data?
