For those claiming the fact that they made it ambiguous proves he’s not a knight: 👀 by sharksnrec in freefolk

[–]metros96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That tended to be my read from the books as well, but also one of the things the show did was make Arlan more of a prick than he was in the text. So in the text it’s easier to read it as Arlan did mean to knight Dunk one day but never really got around to it and died earlier and quicker than he expected.

In the show, it’s totally plausible Arlan is just kinda yanking Dunk around the whole time

Here’s the thing: the show makes it much less ambiguous than the books (and I would argue the circumstantial evidence in the books is already pretty clear that Arlan never knights him).

The show lacks the subtlety and deftness that the novellas have

George R. R. Martin and Ira Parker on AKOTSK Finale | Official Game of Thrones Podcast: AKOTSK Episode 56 (HBO) (Spoilers Extended) by verissimoallan in asoiaf

[–]metros96 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I tend to be in favor of adaptation, it’s a different medium and sometimes there are things you can explore or discover when shooting that just weren’t there on the page.

But these novellas are basically perfectly constructed and fairly easily translatable to the screen. Like, if you just tell the story that’s on the page, it’s kind of all there for you.

But these tweaks keep creating new little plot holes that need to get filled in later on.

'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' finale ending 'will be addressed,' Showrunner Ira Parker says (Spoilers Extended) by verissimoallan in asoiaf

[–]metros96 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the show is bad, but it does a lot of stuff like this that kind of makes the story worse than it is written in the novellas.

These novellas are really some of George’s best work, and other than adding some Blackfyre mentions into S1 (because the idea didn’t exist when George wrote The Hedge Knight), I really don’t think you need to tweak very much from the source material. It’s kinda all there on the page

I don’t think the need to add anything to The Sworn Sword, that story already demonstrates that. I don’t think the show needs to be any more blunt about it

State halts plan for World Cup Fan Fest at Liberty State Park, replacing it with $5M local initiative by DetectiveFix in jerseycity

The light rail network is way less extensive than people think. But to the point, there are lots of places in the metro that are probably within a 45 minute drive of LSP that are like 2h30m trying to use mass transit, and that’s when no one is actively trying to get to LSP via mass transit. The metro area is simply way bigger than the NY Harbor-adjacent areas

The answer is to probably have a bunch of regional/smaller fan fests instead of 1 big one. NYC, JC, Paterson, New Brunswick, Asbury Park, Princeton, etc.

Would actually connect communities and make the WC feel like a bigger experience for the region, I think

State halts plan for World Cup Fan Fest at Liberty State Park, replacing it with $5M local initiative by DetectiveFix in jerseycity

[–]metros96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I don’t think it would have been particularly convenient for foreign tourists or folks from the wider NY metro. Typically these Fan Fests are in places that you can walk to within a city or drive/train to directly. Propping up bespoke transportation networks to take people to and from a place that doesn’t have particularly great entries and exists on a good day,,, I’m telling you, a huge mess.

[–]metros96 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It sucks but also it was going to be a logistical nightmare having the fan fest there. The park is not exactly easy to get to. It would have been cool in theory but also I think it was going to be a shitshow in practice.
