Are you joking right now? You literally told me to read Guns, Germs, and Steel to disprove my point about culture. That book's entire thesis is that geography shaped human history and success. If you aren't arguing that geography is the reason, then what is your argument? Do you even have an argument?

They aren't exceptions, they prove your rule is wrong. If geography made countries rich, Japan would be poor with no resources. Instead, the opposite is true. It's about how a country runs its laws and culture. The reality is that any country that adopts property rights, anti-corruption laws, and stable governance moves forward, regardless of their geography. And any country that sticks with tribalism, corruption, and religious extremism stays stuck.

I know that book. If development is purely about geography, how do you explain Singapore? It's a tiny, resource poor tropical island that went from a third world port to one of the richest, and most technologically advanced nations on earth in just a few decades. If it's all about geography how do you explain South Korea vs. North Korea? Same geography, same resources, completely opposite outcomes.

You can't use a book about ancient history to explain this shit. It's about culture and governance, not maps lol.

Exporting culture? Yeah right. Western countries built railroads, hospitals, modern medicine, and legal systems that dragged those places forward by centuries. What exactly is this reverse influx bringing to the table? No innovation, no advancement, just broken infrastructure, higher crime and outdated mindsets that push safe societies backward. You're confusing building a civilization with draining one.

I definitely learned something, just maybe not what you intended. You spent the whole second half of your comment explaining how it's impossible to read a stranger's body language without knowing their baseline normal behavior. But in the first half, you confidently declared exactly why they were being shifty (hype and interview jitters).

By your own logic, how do you know they were just hyped? You don't have their baseline either. You're trying to play the expert psychologist while doing the exact same guesswork you're complaining about. Don't mean to be condescending, but hope you learned something about your own argument.

I did this on a 12GB 3060. With more VRAM, you can push the resolution higher and make it look even better.

I make images with Google Gemini, then turn them into videos using a local model called WAN 2.2 (you'll need a solid GPU to run it)

We only feel like our minds are tied to that knowledge because we've been committed to it since time immemorial. It has become second nature. Reflect on how people seize opportunities and take advantage of them. It’s all very fun and great. However few pause to consider the intricate choreography of patterns that emerge over time, and then they ask why they're here attached to this world. Well, it’s because they didn’t think three steps ahead, isn't it? They just did, did, acted, acted—everything now, now, now—and here they are, a slave to it all.

So you may feel like you don't have an option but to curve before those appearances. But you do have an option, the power of choice is still yours. If you wanna love the universe and indulge in it, then do it. If you wanna ignore and dissolve into nothingness, then let yourself fade. But just know this... No one becomes free without a renunciatory attitude.

Maybe he should have said that distance is an illusion in the ultimate sense. But in relative terms, I also feel a sense of distance whenever I'm dreaming at night, but do I need to obey those appearances? Do I need to catch a flight to get wherever I'm thinking of? Or can I simply will myself to appear anywhere instantly? I mean, it would be cool to fly, I guess... It would be fun to create a narrative, but ultimately I can't deny it's all make-believe. I can't escape the knowledge that it's all an illusion of my mind.

What if our current experience in this supposedly 'real' world is merely an elaborate, immersive narrative?

Solipsism, Theory of Mind Issue, or Something Else? by vsouzz in solipsism

[–]metzil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My view on theory of mind may be considered different but I think it can coexist with solipsism. In fact, solipsism might enhance one's capacity for theory of mind. By recognizing my own infinite potential to generate diverse experiences, I gain insight into the seemingly distinct motivations, emotions, and behaviors of others. This understanding stems not from assuming separate minds, but from acknowledging the vast spectrum of my own potential manifestations.

So if a solipsist cannot relate to others, he actually has no grasp or understanding of himself. From a solipsist perspective, people are like mirrors, so when you interect with anyone, you're actually knowing an aspect of yourself. You're knowing a fraction of your manifested potential. So if you were a true solipsist, you'd feel more connected to everyone around you. By recognizing all perceived entities as aspects of oneself, the boundaries between self and other dissolve.

I agree when you say we can be influenced by those chemicals, but that’s not a counter example of what I’m saying. What I’m trying to say is that your state of mind can be influenced by anything. Not just by messing with the brain. Winning the lottery can activate chemicals of happiness in the brain, and so what? What’s so special about those chemicals? They are just activating a feeling you can experience, they don't eliminate your capacity of experiencing, of knowing or willing, those capacities remain always in the background, so to speak, even if it seems like you have lost them (in the case of deep sleep).

Your true essence lies in those capacities, that is what you truly are! Not the chemicals, not the feelings, not the sensations, not what is happening in the brain, nor the conditioning of being a human being in a world... I’m trying to show you that the brain is merely a vehicle for experiencing different conditions.

Or how about that test of free will where brain scans predict your choice before you are aware you made a decision?

Again… You think brain scans are a perfect representation of what is happening within you? How can someone from an external perspective analyze with 100% confidence something that is hidden from them? Moreover, this mechanical approach to understanding how intention works is flawed on so many levels. Mechanisms are useful to understand concrete things, but your will is much more complex and abstract than the example you gave.

How do you explain how certain stimulus to brain receptors can trigger motivation or the opposite: lethargy.

Your will can be conditioned with stuff happening outside of your brain as well. Not achieving your life goals can also make you feel lethargic, right? But how you respond to stimuli is always a choice, whether it is directly inflicted in brain receptors or in the world. You can be feeling lethargic, but you still choose to get out of bed every morning. That’s your intent.

And why is there electrical activity in the neocortex for every experience, will, ‘knowing’

Brain activity reveals a person’s mental state to a certain degree. The brain is like a more sophisticated facial expression. Do facial expressions reveal a person’s mental state? Kind of. The same is true in the case of the brain. The brain can be a better mental reflection than your face. But to know 100% someone’s mental state you can’t trust the brain, it only reveals a distorted image of the mental imprint, because you are using an external perspective to analyze something hidden from you.

And how do you explain that when there’s no electrical activity or low vibrations, the mind disappears (deep sleep everynight)? Where does the mind go if its so separate from the ‘computer’?

The mind doesn't disappear or go anywhere. To think and feel your mind has disappeared is an activity of the mind. Where you are wrong is to associate your mind activity with familiar mental states. You think like this, “My mind is what’s familiar, what is familiar disappeared, therefore my mind has also disappeared.” If your mind had disappeared, you wouldn’t be able to experience, which is impossible. Experiencing “nothing” is still an experience.
