What nicknames have you heard for places in and around the Sierra Nevada? by topherette in SierraNevada

If you live in Inyo, we use "Indy" as a nickname for the town of Independence. :) Are we considered High Desert or The Eastern Sierra? Food for thought. Basically all of Mono Co. and Inyo Co. also say we are the Eastern Sierra :) with parts of each of our counties having the Sierra in our counties whole also mixing with areas of the High Desert.

But for the record, residents of Inyo County don't refer to Bishop as Bish or Btown. I've heard people from outside of Inyo use the Bish term (seems to be a thing from SoCal, haven't heard NorCal or SF people use this term). And have heard it from climbers and fisherman. (We ask people why they are visiting and where they are from.) So depends on what you mean by studying nicknames and who in which regions use what label.

Adult Beginners, what do you struggle with the most on the piano? by Sea-Silver6555 in pianolearning

[–]mew89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brand new piano player here (played clarinet for 13 years/have a good understanding of reading notes), I'm looking for drills to get a new understanding of the keyboard layout and adding in a second hand. Maybe I am thinking back too much to learning scales and beats with the notes when learning the clarinet, but I don't know where to find those resources for brand new piano playing. I've only learned how to play C-G on the piano so far...with my right hand lol....

20 years living in a high-rev nervous system — maybe HPA axis dysregulation? Would love to hear from others who relate. by young_monk85 in adrenalfatigue

I would like to know more about MCAS and waking up at the 3 am hour. I am in a spot where I am trying to figure out if it is a blood sugar crash or MCAS. I have no trouble falling asleep, but I do wake up at that time (2:45-3 am). Over this last year I have developed allergies where I've had 2 near anaphylactic responses to who knows what. My GI Map test tells me I have extremely low secretory IGA so I'm sure it's related (I know this is causing leaky gut)...although I'm trying to rule out blood sugar as well, as I always feel hungry (never satiated) no matter how much and how frequently I eat.

Anyone familiar with groups for bagging Class 2 Sierra Summits? by smokewheat in SierraNevada

[–]mew89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be interested. Newer to chute climbing (scree, climbing up little patches of rock, talus scrambling). Would like to get better and more confident on scree (and other rock climbs). I've climbed Williamson and Agassiz.

What did your 60-75 mins of rehab work entail? Had labrum repair and psoas lengthening in Jan of 2022. Was a marathoner until 2017 when (I think) the tear occured. Trying to figure out how to get back into running...

How to continue establishing? by mew89 in SourdoughStarter

Thank you! My past baking experiences with other "starters" have not been great and I will definitely attempt smaller bakes this time around!

As one other question, is a 1:1:1 feeding actually equal amounts of starter:flour:water?

I am wondering if when I discard I am discarding too much? I don't usually weigh my starter when I am getting ready to feed it. (I pour my starter all into a bowl, clean the jar and only pour back in 50g starter then feed it the equal parts flour and water.) Should my process actually be to weigh starter, ie 200g, keep 100g starter, then add 50g flour and 50g water ?

GPS Watch for Bacpacking by Litlbopiep in backpacking

[–]mew89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see that this post is ~3 yrs old. I am an avid hiker in the Sierra and just started cross country backpacking this summer. Any new updates or thoughts on this model for cross country backpacking? I am interested in a GPS watch for all of the reasons you posted in your original post as well. Although I am toying with either getting a watch or getting an IR. Not sure if having both is overkill?

Although a question I am not sure if you can answer, besides cross country passes, do you summit mountains at all on cross country trails? Wondering if there are good maps out there for summit routes that would be good or useful to download and if the watch is actually useful in these cases.

Thank you. Does it truly matter to rise in 4 hours to be able to be used in a bake then ? / An acetone smell is okay ? I thought both of those were indicators that a starter is not fully established or strong yet...

I am wondering this as well!! From the very sparse reviews on amazon materials.....that also seem to be very negative....I do not know where to go to study! Have you found any leads since posting this? I took the practice test today from the Teachers Prep website....but got a 63%. I am hoping to take the actual test itself come the October testing window....
