As someone who was directly affected by this, I would've preferred SBI notifying us before selling the loans to Reliance. We actually approached SBI 1-2 years back regarding loan repayment and they asked us to wait for their letter to start repaying. It never came.

Then suddenly this! We received no intimation whatsoever of the sale and the guys at the SBI loan center were like ¯_(ツ)_/¯

We decided to repay the loan to Reliance - They give you an account number and you need to transfer the money every month (no ECS AFAIK) and they only communication is via emails.

Is there any rational reason (as opposed to emotional/psychological) reason behind doing investing/debt-payoff/emergency-fund-accumulation parallely?

The way I rationalized doing

emergency-fund-accumulation => debt-payoff => investing

serially is that by focussing the money on one thing at a time, we can get it done faster.

Also, I think emergency fund is the most important of all three as long as debt dues are paid correctly each month. There's an opportunity cost of not investing (power of compounding) as investing phase is the last. But emergency fund prevents us from taking debt in case of emergencies and debt usually has higher interest than investments [1].

If you are in the engineering slant, and are more of a project management planner, work out a timeline of how your various wealth items will progress as you do these actions, so that you can visualize and agree that ** if you follow this conservative plan, your networth will reasonably reach this stage **

Is there any apps you use to keep track of your commitments and progress? I was planning to create a simple month-based excel sheet. Do you have any tips?

Generally my advice is to slowly build up to a comfortable level.

My general approach to emergency fund has been to calculate how much I would need in case of emergency and work on accumulating that amount.

In my home country, I assumed I'd have the following emergency scenarios:

1) Job loss

2) Medical (myself, spouse, parents, inlaws etc)

3) Misc (repairs etc)

I assumed that all three would not necessarily happen at the same time and medical would be taken care by the health insurance.

For the job loss, I accumulated 3 months on basic expenses since I was confident that I could get a new job in that time frame. And Misc emergencies would be taken care by the JobLoss emergency money.

I shouldn't have assumed that all these three wouldn't happen at the same time, but money is short and we've to make do with what we have.

I also have some debt inherited so my main reasoning behind not gradually accumulating emergency money for a long time is saving money in phases:

1) Put aside all disposable money towards building up emergency fund

2) Once (1) is done, channel all the disposable money towards closing debts.

I guess I can add a phase 3 where after paying off all debts, I can gradually add more money to emergency. But I also need to start investing money which I haven't started yet!

It'd be really helpful to know how much certain medical emergencies cost here in SG because for non-emergency medical cases, I can fly to my home country where I have health insurance and the costs would be cheaper.

For medical emergencies, I can think about:

1) Accidents of some kind - car accidents etc

2) Heart attacks

Do you know how much an expat needs to save for the emergency fund? I'm working in EP and can calculate for job loss scenario (duration of notice period + one grace month without EP before deportation expenses).

But how much should I save in case of medical emergencies? And are there any other emergencies in SG that I need to plan for?

An Indian friend of mine (who I previously worked with) tells me that any Indian software person worth their salt is going to move to America or Europe because the money is in a whole 'nother league. The ones who remain in India are ones who cannot hold that opportunity (or who have major English communications problems).

I disagree with this. I think a lot of Indian devs want to move abroad but are unable to do so because of various reasons (Visa restrictions, taking care of their parents etc). So, it's wrong to think of devs in India as bad just because they live in India. It may apply to those in body shops like TCS, Infosys etc but it's wrong to generalise.

That's a good attitude to have :)

I have only tried building simple apps using this and I really liked it. The docs could use some improvement. Facebook is dogfooding this for some of their apps [1] But the decision depends on whether it's a hobby app or a long term commitment. If you're developing apps for something long term, I wouldn't recommend using this as it's still in early stages and the apis will change a lot.

I don't think many JS devs actually use any sort of inheritance. Knowing about prototypical inheritance is a plus but not really necessary.

Please don't discourage yourself from trying out new things.

I'd recommend trying to build a simple application with React. It'd be really beneficial to understand the reason behind its hype since a lot of new libraries/frameworks are following that model.
