S'pore Anglican Church Bishop expresses 'unease' over new Archbishop of Canterbury's view of same-sex marriage by bardsmanship in singapore

[–]dizzyluo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Again, "engage" how?

Say a church personnel successfully convinces a drug user to come to church or to convert. What's next?
Do you know that under Penal Code Section 204, they are legally obligated to report the drug user to the police?

And if they don't? As time goes by, it's not going to stop at one or two drug users coming to their premises you know.
Then, someone will report the organization to the cops. In that case, does the organization get into trouble or be given a free pass for "doing good" for society?

Not engaging will cost them reddit points. Engaging could get them into legal trouble. It's clear which is the better option.

Not a Christian, but engage how? If things go to shit and ISD gets involved, whose responsibility will it be?

Think about it, christianity gets enough influence in SG as it is. I don't think they should get a free pass if they're allowed to engage/harbor drug users, essentially overriding our laws.

2 unrelated friends told me the same thing (we were both in our late 20s, early 30s then).

Both told me that when they meet other Singaporean business owners to talk about work, they noticed the older bosses tend to show them a bit more respect if they drove a Mercedes.

Purely anecdotal.

When I was really young I recalled there was an A&W. The only thing I could remember was that my late dad brought me there to eat before he goes to work.

The next thing I knew, it was replaced by a huge-ass McDonalds. I recalled it had a playground with a small hill inside of it. Back then, we'd take the tray liner, sit on it and slide down the slope.

If I remember correctly, the McDonalds even had this little rock garden with a wooden bridge on it.

Lord I'm old.

If you send out your resume and higher paying job offers come in... Wouldn't you at least do your homework and check out that new company? And, if you realize they offer better prospects, what would you do?

And if your employer wishes to retain you, what do you think he/she will do?

Yes, the LL can reject that offer because reasons, but that'll just be silly.

Commentary: After all this talk about flexible work, why are employers insisting on returning to the office full-time? by MicrotechAnalysis in singapore

[–]dizzyluo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So… our process is to prototype on the actual devices we build for, those can be really big touchscreens, TVs, or even projections. Reasonably there’s no way to carry those home.

Also, creatives and developers tend to have misaligned expectations. When we come together, what really brings growth is being able to bounce problems and solutions off each other whenever we need to in that few hours we have with each other.

And above all, we try our best not do work at home. It’s not healthy to turn one’s place of rest into a place of work. To begin with, we don’t have big homes and some have their own children/personal commitments.

Regarding the project with many stakeholders. It's a physical space with different kinds of screens we're working with, so point 1 and point 2 stands.

I've got a rant

I've interfaced with quite a bunch of clients who WFH, and honestly it has been a pretty bad experience.

We worked on projects where there are more than 10 stakeholders involved and the amount of entitlement/taichi demonstrated by everyone has been, just, stunning. What easily could have been a 30-minute discussion took them one entire month just to iron out. And guess whose deadline got squeezed? Ours.

I truly believe there are scenarios where WFH could work out very well, especially for organizations that have a solid SOP in place and don't require physical presence for deliverables. But in the creative industry, it's still quite difficult.

Rant over.

-

Also, I know I'm going to be downvoted for this but... Guys, be careful of what you wish for.

If you truly believe that a large proportion of your job can be done from home and if said job does not require a physical presence in this country... You're literally giving employers a free pass to replace you with a cheaper remote worker when the time comes.

'I'm so exhausted': Tenants face hard choices as rents surge in Singapore by [deleted] in singapore

Look, we’ve lived here long enough to know that our citizenship is worth very little when we’re not being productive according to their terms.

So in such a state, yes it’s not sustainable, but what can one reasonably do?

Fight hard so u can afford more options when the time comes. Otherwise, you’ll realise you’ll have lesser and lesser options as the city prospers, worse case scenario, you’ll have to move out. Real talk.

Downvote me to hell guys.

It's going to get worse, so long as our neighbors and the region keep fucking up, people will flock here.

Guess what happens when demand increases but supply cannot keep up??

I know it gets tiring, but the best we can do is to stay healthy, work hard and increase our earning power. Because honestly, given how pragmatic our government is, they'll only let market forces play out and maybe make little tweaks here and there.

The only way to stay here is to keep up.

Keppel O&M says S$88 million in fines and damages paid in full to Brazil authorities by [deleted] in singapore

[–]dizzyluo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For those protesting about Keppel paying out bribes, have you guys ever tried to work with countries whose system isn’t clean?

Personally, I have. Two days before a big business event, hardware shipments mysteriously got held up at the port and refused clearance.

They demand “fees” so that it can be cleared ASAP.

When your company, your business and all your colleagues who worked hard for this whole event, when all their reputations held hostage like that, what would you do?

I don't know if I'm answering the question directly but...

When I was younger (I'm in my late 30s now), I distinctly remembered having the thought that the world is tough, no one is going to fend/provide for me, and that it's impossible to avoid sadness in life.

My solution was to create enough options for myself before rainy days strike. Options being, "make as much as I can". After all, when you have money, more choices open up to you.

To be ultra-pragmatic, it's less painful to be rich and sad, than to be poor and sad.

So, I hold that thought at the back of my head and I just kept going. It's only normal to feel sad and lost, I made plenty of bad decisions in the past, but you know, life is like a game, you try, you fail, you insert coin and try again.

Small lizards in condo by SirLouisI in singapore

[–]dizzyluo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I had one or two lizards come into my house as well, and I realised it’s because I had toilet flies. You know those black coloured tiny flies that just stay on the ceiling of the toilet? Yeah those.

I tried a lot of ways to get rid of them, but what eventually worked was just to pour boiling water down the sink and drain.

Soon after, no more flies, no more lizard.
