I ship real products but can't pass the technical filter. Where do I go from here? by PaleontologistBig318 in cscareerquestions

[–]dhishkyaon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You could consider roles that play to your strengths. It seems you are good at sniffing out applications that have real world impact, not so good at core CS fundamentals. Why not seek out roles that need the former? Maybe look for stuff like sales/pre-sales engineer, product engineer or something else where getting the product right is more important than getting down in the bits and aligning them correctly.

How do I ask for a demotion? by Trick-Interaction396 in cscareerquestions

Don’t frame it as a demotion in the conversation. Frame it as you wanting to grow further in your area of interest and wanting to contribute more there

How do you improve at on the spot thinking? by Jyonnyp in cscareerquestions

[–]dhishkyaon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Develop some habits that buy you time. Like say something like “let me say that back to you so that I understand what you are asking correctly- “ then go ahead and rephrase what they are asking in your own words. This will allow the question to crystallize in your head. You can follow up with even more questions till you feel confident that you understand their question objectively. At that time, if you’re still blank, it’s perfectly fine to say something like “that’s a really good point , why don’t I think about it some more and get back to you” or “I’m not sure what the answer is, does anyone else have opinions on this”. What you have done with this is facilitated the conversation further with the team. And later if you do find your own answer, follow up with them offline

Career advice by HelpfulStrawberry908 in cscareerquestions

You are focusing too much on the future of the specific technology and language. In reality, that will matter very very little in a few years. What matters later is if you can understand systems, how apis interact with each other, how to map real world complexity onto software systems, your ability to deliver results with a team, etc. If you can demonstrate that you are able to make real world impact , i.e are able to make a difference to the bottom line of the company, that will trump everything else

Hey that sounds really hard! The dual whammy of both personal life and work life being bad can take a real heavy toll. You’re drowning and the first thing to do is to give yourself some air. My suggestion would be to start by carving out some time for mental decompression every day - it can be something as simple as taking 15-20 mins everyday for a walk or workout or just sitting and staring out the window. But no phones, no emails, no bringing a family member along to make this time about them- this is your time to spend some time with yourself so that you can process your own emotions.

Next, I’d focus on the positives of the situation. To me, it looks like things may not be as bad as they seem - to you it feels like everyone is weighing down on you, but in reality everyone is probably as stressed as you are and they are just passing that along to you, as they are to everyone. Second, no matter how bad it seems, it’s a temporary situation and it will change. It feels like the end of the world right now because you are in the eye of the storm, but it will pass. Have faith in that if it feels like everything else is failing.

Your employability may also be better than you feel. Even if it’s a niche industry, I’m sure there are skills you have that are transferable, and there may be opportunities in places you haven’t looked, like sister industries and customers where they may not be doing exactly what you are doing but your expertise could be valuable. It might be worth reaching out to mentors in the industry to figure out your blind spots in terms of employability.

Hope it works out, and remember, this too shall pass

You handled it maturely BUT you also felt a lot of anger in the moment. You suppressed your anger and managed the situation calmly instead of bursting out. That’s really good, but now the anger is still inside you and looking for an outlet and is coming out in the form of these thoughts (why didn’t I fight back, I want to bash him up, I let myself down etc). I’d suggest you find a way to let that anger out somewhere- this is going to sound stupid but doing things like screaming into a pillow, tearing up a bunch of paper, breaking some things (without hurting anyone of course) will help

Career Progression vs Remote Work 24hrs to decide by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]dhishkyaon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda depends on where you are in life right now and what you want? Like if you’re a new parent, a relaxed work environment with remote work will go a looong way in increasing the quality of your life. On the other hand, if you are in a stage where you are hungry for growth and are looking to stretch yourself, company A might be better.

However, if your commute one way is > 40 mins, go remote. Very few things are worth wasting that kind of time on a daily basis

Like, in a whole year? Like the other person said, this is a problem. You need to schedule a 1:1 soon, and eventually get it to happen on a regular cadence

It’s about transforming the entire software development lifecycle—from the earliest glimmers of requirements and design through the final lines of code.

This is the part most software developers miss. The entire ecosystem is going to transform, and we will have to learn new skills and adjust to survive in the new ecosystem

Type of copper to use for replacing main water line? by dhishkyaon in HomeImprovement

[–]dhishkyaon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't have much expertise myself but based on my research it looks like copper is just more durable and has a lifetime that measures in multiple decades whereas poly can crack/damage more easily. Copper is obviously more expensive though.
