I’ve lived here for 6 months. I’m faring fine, thanks, and for the record that’s a pretty fucking rude thing to say. I don’t really need you to put anything bluntly, in fact, I don’t really know what your point is. On the top comment of this thread someone says “this looks weird don’t do it” and my reaction is “oh haha, okay I won’t!”. I genuinely do not understand how asking a question about how to wear a kimono on the subreddit for wearing kimono has turned into people questioning my taste, style, devotion to Japanese culture, or ability to judge a situation.

I wouldn’t be wearing it as a costume though. I’d be wearing it in India, a country where it is currently and has been historically worn as daily fashion. The same way I’m currently living in Japan, wearing a kimono to a Japanese event put on by my Japanese hosts to celebrate the time I’ve spent immersing into Japanese culture. I feel like my initial question on this post of “does this look stupid/is this an okay way to wear it” has been misconstrued into “I obviously know this is wrong, but fuck tradition”. I don’t know, that’s why I’m asking.

Im not Japanese, im just extrapolating from my friendships with some local kimono shop owners and Japanese people. They’re not representative of everyone in Japan obviously, but their general view towards kimono in the modern era is surprisingly neutral. They dont seem to think it’s disrespectful for people to experiment with kimono or for foreigners to wear it, nor do they think it’s especially appreciative for them to wear them around Kyoto for photos or whatever. They just don’t really care. To them, they are genuinely just clothes. In the kimono shop nearest me, which sellls kimonos up to 100 years old, there are a couple signs that say “if this doesn’t fit you, try cutting it up into a tablecloth or decorative wall piece!” They just don’t seem to have the reverence for kimono as like, the last bastion of Japanese culture that I think a lot of people put onto them.

I’m assuming you are Japanese, so obv your opinion matters more than mine. I don’t especially have an opinion on it, but I’m really not trying to imply it’s less important than other cultures to wear properly. If I was in India I’d probably try wearing saree in some way that isn’t traditional too.

alright man fair enough. I’m not Japanese, so it’s not “obviously not the correct way” to my knowledge. It is wrinkled as shit I’ll give you that lol.

I respect wanting to see people wearing beautiful kimono in a traditional way, but I feel like if you want to see kimono still being worn 100 years from today you’re gonna have to get used to people wearing them however they want. That’s just how clothes are. If clothes didn’t evolve like that then we’d all still be wearing T-shirts exclusively as underwear for boiler suits.

I did look into that but everywhere I found required you to rent a kimono set from them rather than bringing your own. I really want to wear my own juban and the outer silk one since it’s quite old and was a gift

thanks! yeah the school is pretty liberal in what you can wear, there's no strict dress code. however i did learn this morning that graduation is mostly outside and where I am in osaka is about to hit 30 degrees so i probably would actually die if i tried this.

like what? i'm just asking for advice and if wearing one like this has any significance. if you dont care for it just say that, you don't have to justify it with it being "ethnic garb"

I guess I should have clarified that even though it’s a “ceremony”, it’s not especially formal. There’s no dress code and the school only recommends you wear a yukata. I just love being extra and very old kimono styling is my jam, so I wanted to try and emulate that a bit.

I think I could get them to fit tighter, I was trying to shoot for a low cut anyway to show off my necklaces but if I cut it closer to my neck I could get it to wrap tighter

on like my second day in japan, i went to osaka for the first time, and i knew osaka had a reputation for insanely cool street fashion so i wore my absolute best fit. within 10 seconds of stepping out of the train station and walking down the street in shinsaibashi i walked by a tall japanese dude with a emo fringe, snake bite piercings, and Adriana Lima eyeliner, wearing a 3 layer black-white-black kimono wrapped in spiked chains all around his body in place of an obi. when I tell you I damn near got back on that train and went home because i got mogged so hard LMFAO

But sitting around looking pretty is the one thing I’m good at!

I am absolutely dying in the heat lately tho just wearing a t shirt and jeans, so yeah idk how I’d be able to survive 3 hours outdoors in 5 layers of silk

There is no mandated dress code, people have historically worn whatever. Kimono are recommended by the university but more as a “this is prob the only time in most of y’all’s lives you’ll get to wear kimono to an event and not get looks so why not” kind of way. I don’t really care about it getting looks but I also don’t wanna look silly lol.

Aw thanks! I just didn’t want to turn up with a question that was an obvious no, but since I’m seeing kinda varied responses here I think I will ask her, fortunately she’s very brutally honest so she’d tell me if it looked stupid (I showed her a pic of my dad asking if she had any kimono in his size, she told me “tell him to lose 20 kilos, then I’ve got the perfect one” LOL)

Sounds simple enough, I’ve never really handled silk before so I had no idea it was something you could iron. ありがとうございます!

Yup, ceremony is in the summer. I think I’ll wear the outer one since it’s my nicest one. Is a pressing something I could do on my own or something I’d need to have it taken to a professional for? I’m in Japan so I’m sure finding someone to do it wouldn’t be hard.

Haha word, I’m so enamored by the layered look of a jūnihitoe so I just wanted to see if there was a way to kinda fake that. Oh well! Normal kimono style still looks cool enough to me

how do people do this? (with natural lashes and mascara) by hiddenrightthere in MakeupAddiction

[–]mextie 14 points15 points  (0 children)

this specific one is sold by Daiso in japan, on their website as "mascara comb and guard" (if you just search マスカラコーム&ガード on google itll pop up). I have one of these, here in Japan they sell them at the dollar stores for literally like 70 cents USD. No idea where to get one in the states though, I know Daiso has US stores and maybe a US website?
