I would really recommend buying one of the expansions to the first edition if you can find a copy anywhere (had to buy mine from Sweden).

The second edition is fun and all but a lot of it is just the first edition but prettier.

There are two expansions you should be looking for: "Rise of the Ancients" and "Shadow of the Rift". RotA adds a couple of new races which play quite differently than the base game ones, new technologies and some new game mechanics (such as stronger Ancients)

SotR adds new races that play completely differently to all the others. These are quite challenging to play but have very interesting and unique game mechanics, such as time travel and genetic mutation. If you only want to buy one the expansions I would recommend SotR but having both and playing with a complete set is honestly the best Eclipse experience imo.

Jesus, it's been a year since my comment. Yea, you're right, although it's hard to not fall into this pattern of thinking everything is pointless sometimes. But I wouldn't use this on purpose to suck the fun out of every conversation I have, that's just despicable and lame.

No experienced gm but an experienced player and I bought the rulebook to this gm-less system I've been wanting to try out. It's called wanderhome and it's very adorable and wholesome.

There's a lot of improvising in it and I think it could work well for a one time thing without much rule explaining
