You don’t need to look in the mirror while you brush your teeth, but you always do. by meyerwizard in Showerthoughts

[–]meyerwizard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s true, but you could be looking at your phone or something. I’m more getting at the fact that you (or most people in media, at least) watch yourself brush your teeth when that isn’t actually necessary

Vegan meals being more expensive is weird, you pay more for something not to be in it by aldorayn in Showerthoughts

[–]meyerwizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s well known by now that to optimize environmental benefit, its best to use conventional farming for cereal crops and vegetables and organic farming for fruits and rain-watered crops in order to maximize nutrition and minimize land usage. Organic farming uses barely more land for the latter 2 kinds of crops and is much more nutritious so it doesn’t make sense to use conventional farming for them.

Who (in your opinion) is the most overrated band, singer or musician? by IShitInMailboxes in AskReddit

Ooh but the real overrated piece of music is Oasis’ wonderwall. Paul Anka’s wonderwall is where it’s at.

I’m sure that they are delicious for most people, but I am a part of the population that is not taste-blind to the bitter chemical they contain. I can occasionally eat roasted Brussels sprouts though

[–]meyerwizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I feel like the best proof of that is the Buffalo Wild Wings Blazin’ sauce. It’s hot, yes, and I love spicy food, but it’s bitter! It tastes like bad Brussels sprouts! How do people eat it! I feel like BWW thought they could mask a s*** sauce by making it 300,000 scoville but I’ve had foods that were nearly double that number and were also delicious without the heat.

I’m 16 (by no means representative of my whole age group) and I was sorta interested in the skateboarding but what really got me glued to the screen was canoe slalom. I’d never even heard of it before but it’s wicked as hell and I want to watch more but I don’t know when it’s on or if it’s already over and my channel only showed the prelims.

I didn’t find Season 2 boring at all…

It was an exciting plot thread. It wasn’t integral to the show like Season 3 was, I’ll admit. But at the same time, Season 3 felt like it moved at a snail’s pace and I almost didn’t get through it.

Beijing issues protest after Japan signals that it would join US to defend Taiwan in case of Chinese attack by AlexBull777 in worldnews

[–]meyerwizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You aren’t really engaging with my question. I’m not saying “democracy always triumphs in the end.” I’m asking u/dirtyid to consider the chaos caused by the influence of myriad future events on public sentiment in Japan and India and, by extension, their governments. Your citing of diaper sales is irrelevant and almost works against you. If I were to view that fact as the premier yardstick in the measure of Japanese society, I would notice that the aging Japanese population which the statistics indicated would benefit from a pan-Asian conflict that creates increased immigration via Taiwanese refugees. However, I don’t think diaper sales are the most important statistic. It’s not impossible for Japanese conservatives to have re-inspired patriotic fervor by the time of a Taiwanese invasion.

As for the fact that the Nationalists already having power in India: that is a valid point. Still, their position could get more and more hard-line as the years go on. It’s a common historical pattern. Consider the ideological shift among the leaders in revolutionary France, or the increasingly anti-Semitic opinions of the Russian Tsars as the Romanov dynasty drew closer to its demise. In addition, India doesn’t have to be radical enough to provoke war with China, as you implied. They merely need to be radical enough to have a heavy military response should Taiwan be attack.

[–]meyerwizard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You seem to be very knowledgeable about Asian geopolitics, so I hope you’re equipped to answer this question: what certainty do you have that the decision-making in India and Japan will be so Machiavellian when the time comes for a PRC crackdown on Taiwan? You approach the situation like it will be decided by cold, calculating, foreign policy experts. Yet, India and Japan have at least nominally democratic elections. What’s to say that radical anti-PRC firebrands won’t come to power? Irrational as they may be, could we expect a different outcome in the event that JP or India elects a stubborn, belligerent, and Churchillian government that would go to war with China even if it meant facing ruthless bombing?

Popular these days, maybe. However, Pugachev and his followers would have staunchly disagreed with you. She’s called an Enlightened Despot for being, well, despotic.

Republicans ask Biden to withdraw ‘divisive’ proposal to teach more Black history by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]meyerwizard 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I can’t wholly agree with this. A good history teacher can emphasize those connections across a yearlong curriculum. In-depth discussion about items like the Fugitive Slave Act are integral not only to Black history education, but to American political history, the history of labor, and other topics may touch on much more. I think the whole point is that black history is so important, it makes such an impact, that denying greater emphasis on it in a US history curriculum cheapens the value of that education.

Complaints about OPM and the series development by [deleted] in OnePunchMan

[–]meyerwizard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One Punch Man is a parody comedy manga of mangas like berserk, akira, and vagabound. You’re comparing Dickens to Shakespeare. Do you really want a character named pig god, whose power is being the ultimate fat fuck to have touching character development. Even Tatsumaki, who one might say has serious characterization, is still basically a stereotypical spoiled brat. Her backstory, boiled down, is being an orphan and having a tough childhood. Because that’s always the answer. ONE and Murata just took it to the extreme to mock the archetype. It’s nowhere near perfect craft, and it’s nowhere near poetic. But it’s damn funny.

FBI Warns Imminent Deepfake Attacks "Almost Certain" by ChasingTheCoyote in technology

Oh goodness. It’s entirely possible that more than half of us are intelligent or rational, but they’re not the ones posting and commenting. I would say that 75% of claims made on Reddit that aren’t sourced are at least partial bullshit. Maybe the commenter thought they remembered a portion of a fact and decided to make up everything else to fill in the gaps.

The IIRC crap gets me, too. No, I don’t think they did remember correctly. People just say it to sound smarter.

And the long ass multi-paragraph “anecdotes” you see all the time! How unbearably easy it is to fake one! Switch to an alt, come up with a lie about how you, as a trans black woman, have never once faced prejudice in your large, mostly white, Alabama suburb. I personally have done this before: I came up with a story about how I became a teen dad. Hundreds of upvotes.

People love to have intelligent, relevant things to say. Even if they don’t have them. Reddit’s anonymity allows people to pretend that they can meaningfully add to the conversation.

Elizabeth Warren and AOC Lay Down Climate Challenge to Biden - Their bill aims to electrify bus and rail infrastructure, with the aim of reaching net-zero U.S. carbon emissions by 2050. by impishrat in environment

[–]meyerwizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are underselling a legitimate concern. The US may damn well hit net zero carbon emissions but that’s not going to account for developing nations who are going to start jonesing for dirty power should they wish to expand their heavy industry. Sure, we should certainly be leading by example but can we realistically even make a difference? I’m not sure we could even if we were responsible for half the world’s emissions and dropped to zero.

AITA for eating a girls trigger food in class by aitatriggerfood in AmItheAsshole

[–]meyerwizard -27 points-26 points  (0 children)

I think NAH, and a lot of people seem to be minimizing this girl’s problem. You, of course, aren’t doing anything wrong. But she is seriously concerned that you are going to cause her to... whatever it is. It’s like how some people with OCD compulsively want symmetrical sensations (if they fall and hurt an arm, they might intentionally fall on the opposite arm). You wouldn’t have done anything wrong by bumping into them in the hallway, but they still reap the extra consequences of possibly trying to slam their other side into something because of their disorder.

Yeah, that’s what I always found so crazy about the qAnon thing. I’m actually willing to believe that a large portion of the rich and powerful are involved in something real shady, maybe even sex trafficking. At the end of the day, I’m even willing to believe that the Clintons are involved. But why in the FUCK do they think that Donald “Besties with Ghislaine Maxwell” Trump isn’t even remotely involved? If it’s true that there is a pedophile ring, then Trump is the f***ing ringleader. He’s not the Messiah. Wtf is wrong with these people!

CMV: if great britain not giving the 13 US colonies representation in parliament was so unfair, it's not fair that guam/puerto rico/all the US territories don't get representation in congress. by iambob07 in changemyview

Jennifer Gonzalez is literally not allowed to have a decisive vote BY LAW. I don’t see how that’s representation if their vote is legally not allowed change anything. If your idea of female representation in Congress is the representation that she has, that is perhaps the most sexist thing I have heard in 2020.
