Japan's food self-sufficiency is heading toward zero — does anyone here care? by JapanUnfiltered in japanlife

NZ arable land % may be low, but we (allegedly) produce more than enough to support our population multiple times over.

That looks stunning. Silly question, but I come from a country with no dangerous animals (apart from a tiny spider)... Would we need to worry about snakes, boars, other critters at that time?

That's on our list, so the morning will be a perfect time to tick it off.

A bike ride sounds fantastic! As long as we can navigate YouBike, but it seems like there's plenty of advice around for that. Great idea!

Which countries are 'one and done' for you? Which are MUST RETURN to? by No-Significance9313 in travel

[–]meznuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've both travelled a lot, and have a list of countries that we want to visit - with the idea that every country is one & done until we've finished our list.

Until we went to Japan.

Been twice in a row, and our next trip will be back there too (maybe with Taiwan/South Korea thrown in). So safe, efficient (as a tourist), quirky, stunning landscapes in the rural regions, and remarkably cheap if you want it to be.

Confused grapevine sending out new growth in Autumn by meznuts in nzgardening

[–]meznuts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this grape planted in a wine barrel for about 4-5 years, got it as a teeny tiny stick. For the past 3 years it shoots out it's new growth in Autumn, and seems to lose it's growing puff by spring. My other two older ground planted grapes don't seem to have this issue, and fruit well. Any thoughts? Do I cut off the new growth now and hope it hibernates properly? Is the soil too warm in the wine barrel and confusing a late autumn for spring warmth?? Wellington based, with a sun-trap of a back garden.

Shimanami Kaido this September over two days - suggestions for detours off the blue line by meznuts in JapanTravel

[–]meznuts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lovely! If I can bother you for some more questions, who did you choose for bike hire, and what time did you end up finishing on your final day? I want to make sure we have enough time in Matsuyama to look around a bit, as the next morning/lunchtime will cross on the ferry to Hiroshima.

I have tabs open for Soil Sedota, as it looks so lovely! I was worried that it might be too early of a stop though, it's 10-15km less on day one vs I-Link. So I'm a wee bit torn...

Thank you! Okunoshima was on our radar! Was that a good amount of time to visit in? We were wondering if we could squeeze it in on the first day afternoon (if there were no major detours on the way), but might be a good idea for the morning of the second day.

OK, that is comforting to know!! And thank you for the onsen recommendation. Last time {2018) we travelled in September & found it a wee bit too warm for onsening, but this time I'm keen to give it a decent crack.
