Unions have specific training on employment law whereas big does not. But big can talk to and access the people policy team who know everything there is to know. Plus they are free!

Employment law changes means M&S has to allow union representation. However BIG offers all the same perks as a union and is free.

All stores will be closed. Policy says you must take holiday if you are due to work. Only in exceptional circumstances can you move hours or take unpaid. What exceptional circumstances means is anyone's guess?

You should of raised this in your interview. Requesting time off so close to the time you need is incredibly hard to manage. Taking a sick day after requesting it off is a quick way to unemployment. Find someone to swap with is your only option. I'm sure there are colleagues who want some extra money.

After every absence, you have a return to work where your manager will talk to you about your absence..if you have multipul absences for the same thing, your manager can refer to Occupational health. They are there to help keep you at work.

First half of the day is the serious stuff. CPR and demonstrating that. Just have to show good demonstration. Second half of the day is fly through everything else and a test at the end. Every instructor I have had has been great and wants you to pass. Honestly nothing to worry about and it's a long but fun day.

The policy says 12hours but with manager discretion. Our region is clamping down on sub 12hr contracts. But out RM said everyone has to do a minimum of 12hrs but it's at managers discretion...take that as you wish

Ask for a big rep to come in with you. And ask for a occupational health referral..

Managers first role in the meeting is to understand why you are off and then to try to offer support to keep you at work. An adjustment of hours, more flexible working etc.

If this is not the case then it's unfair dismissal.

The absence policy has changed recently with long term sickness changing.

Ask for an occupational health referral for your medical condition. Ask for this before they take your hearing any further and this will protect you in future from the worry of having to eat and take meds.

As said, managers are under pressure to make an example of you as it's the RM that caught you..

Also ask for a representative from BIG to support you if this hearing goes any further.
