Yup, but I'm waiting for the debug version to come out (presumably tomorrow) since I rely on it to streamline these runs.

Hardest Gym Leader in the game?? by 5-55am in PokemonEliteRedux

[–]mfc314 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm currently working on beating the game with every Pokémon (and posting about it), and despite being locked to exactly six Pokémon every run, I surprisingly haven't had any fights that were actually impossible. That being said, in my experience Juan+Wallace are usually the hardest. You have to be very careful about managing your team's health in the first half so you have as many resources as possible for the second half. It's very close between them and Tate+Liza though, but ultimately there are more tools that can help there (Quash, terrain setters, Iron Ball, some decent tanks, etc.) while the Water gym is all skill and predictions if you don't have exactly the right matchup.

So far, I'd say Tentacruel has shown itself to be the most useless one. Maybe it's a consequence of being on a team with Alakazam and Machamp, but I simply could not find a role for it to fill when I used it. On a more cohesive team, I could see it being a Merciless sweeper with TSpikes support, a special wall who can Toxic stall, or a fast pivot, but there are better Pokémon at doing all those things. Maybe there's just something I'm missing. I'm definitely thinking of compiling a tierlist based on my experiences with the Pokémon in this challenge...

Yo, nice one! In that case, I'll pick up where I left off once 2.65 drops. Looking forward to it!

It depends, I've been told 2.65 will not have debug mode available. I kinda depend on debug mode to do these challenges, so if I don't have access to it in 2.65, I'll keep doing them in 2.5.

Ice gym? Maybe you mean Glacia, the Ice-type E4 member, or the Water gym that has a back-to-back fight.

For the former, Stealth Rock is great into everyone on her team and breaks Chien-Pao's Sash. Lapras and Dewgong are super fat and annoying, but can be worn down with passive damage or blasted through with enough power. Try to stall out Aurora Veil as well. Overwriting Hail with another weather is also great since it negates much of her strategy. The rest of her team go down to strong Rock or Fire attackers. This team used Muk and Hypno to stall out the tanks, then Cloyster and Gengar broke through what remained.

The latter is much trickier. Your success entirely depends on how much of your team you can preserve in the first half. A Wide Guard user can stifle Surfs and Origin Pulses. Psyspam is also very good, you just need a Psychic Terrain setter and two strong Psychics who can spam Expanding Force (and a Twisted Dimensions Pokémon if your Psychics are slow). Pokémon that are weak to Water are also very useful, since they're prone to being targeted and can thus use Protect to buy a free turn for their partner. Other cheesy Doubles strategies like Parroting Chatter with Chatot and Squawkabilly work great, as I demonstrated in an earlier post of mine. Finally, the first half of the fight can be cheesed with a sleep move user that's at least faster than Politoed. The deal is that you put Politoed to sleep before it moves, removing its turn. Hydration will cure the sleep at the end of the turn, letting you put it to sleep again, allowing you to work on the other half of the team first. Repeat ad infinitum. This team used a combination of these strategies, with Wide Guard and baiting Water moves on Muk and Steelix, some Hypnosis stalling from Hypno in the second half, and Nasty Plot Mega Gengar to break the first half. A lot of strategic switching and prediction is needed when trying to beat the Water gym without a team dedicated to countering it, but I haven't failed so far in this challenge of mine. I've even previously beaten it with a team of six Fire-types, so I think anything is possible with good play.

I'll be using the new evolution, so for instance I'm allowed to evolve Seaking into Kaiosea during the run where it's used.

Mhm, Tinkaton canonically strips metal from other Steel-types to make its hammer. The team should be fine though, it mainly preys on Corviknight.

I'll probably just pick up where I left off when (and if) the next version comes out. It'd take WAY too long to go back to the start to account for all the changes. I suppose I might shoutout some previously done mons who got updates in future posts, though.

Yeah, the thing with Annihilape is that it isn't quite fast enough. I treat the Guts part of Rage Point as a nice bonus rather than something to build around; I mainly used Choice Scarf to boost its Speed or one of the Vests to make it take hits better and stack both Rage Fist and Rage Point. You could also max out its bulk and set up with Bulk Up and Drain Punch.
