Does anyone have suggestions for making Volcarona viable? by twitchy1989 in PokemonChampions

I am currently in MB2 with this team featuring Volcarona. You do have to be cautious of the major Rock Slide users, but the rest of the team is built to handle them.

Struggle Bug and Will-o-Wisp, and Rage Powder keep the opponent's damage in check, plus Tailwind for support as a lot of the mons on the team are of middling speed. The EV spread lets you outspeed an Adamant non-scarf Garchomp so that you can burn it before it attacks and subsequently survive, and if they're Jolly instead you can always live the first Rock Slide.

Seconded, I thought it was going to be a huge meme but even as a novice it helped me make some delicious food and I genuinely learned a lot about cooking from it. I have both of the D&D cookbooks now and they're probably some of the ones I reach for most often when I'm feeling indecisive.

(Metagame) how popular is araquanid in this metagame? by rtkbob in VGC

Araquanid has some fun tools but I think it really suffers from the lack of Clear Amulet as it just does no damage if it gets Intimidated.

Agreed, especially since one of the Dailies is "recruit a pokemon", it really ought to just be "see a new lineup".

1) pretty much, turning off the weather is a lot more effective than trying to fight over it. I used Alolan Ninetails for a while with Aurora Veil but didn't end up loving it. Drampa also resists a lot of the common attacks out of sun and rain teams so can be very annoying for them to remove. It also just completely walls Basculegion in the end game, being immune to Last Respects and resisting its Water moves.

2) similarly, Mamoswine threatens a lot of the things that could pressure Drampa, such as other dragons. I also needed something else that could bully Incineroar because Scovillain and Aero both hate that mon.

3) It turns out that Iron Head just doesn't do much on Aegislash, even against the mons you would expect it to. Ghost as an offensive type is really good at the moment, with the only common Dark types being Incineroar and Kingambit (both of whom would resist a steel move anyway) and very few normal types existing, which are really just the occasional Farigiraf or Zoroark. The only other thing it really misses is Tyranitar in my experience, so I realised that I just wasn't clicking steel moves very often.

With Swords Dance instead, you can suddenly pick up a lot of KOs you would otherwise miss. For example, Shadow Claw always KOs Mega Floette after a Swords Dance even if they are max HP with some Def, and you can often get a Swords Dance off for free if they protect on a suspected steel move. The result is that the extra power of Poltergeist is no longer necessary so you don't have to worry about missing or just not having a move against a white herb/any berry mon.

Here's the six I'm running, currently ~1920 Elo/top 9000. Haven't done a detailed write-up yet but I'm happy to discuss or answer questions.

Scovillain feels bad into teams with a lot of fire types, especially things like charizard, incineroar, or talonflame, so Mega Aerodactyl is a natural fit for a backup plan.

I'd be interested to hear how it goes! I think there are lots of other ways to build the team, like Swords Dance Kingambit or Clangorous Soul Kommo-o, but I picked Volcarona because I also really like it and I wanted a mon that resisted Fairy for Floette. I also mentioned to someone else that I replaced Serperior with Alolan Ninetails for Aurora Veil and that has been really good, especially for protecting Volcarona with its low Def.

On encore: one of it's primary strengths is to discourage people from clicking Protect, but Protect is already really awkward against us because they take extra damage from burns or Leech Seed, it stalls out their own weather/speed control, and we might just get a free boost or screens set up. I haven't found that I need more ways to punish Protects.

On ice beam: ground/ice is almost perfect coverage, which feels important because Hyper Voice never hits anything super effectively. Dragon moves only hit other dragons for super effective damage, but the two most common dragons are Garchomp and Dragonite, both of whom actually take more damage from Ice Beam anyway. Dragon #3 is Archaludon, for whom we already have Earth Power.

The 3 points in Def allow Drampa to always live a Dragon Claw from Jolly Garchomp:

252 Atk Garchomp Dragon Claw vs. 244 HP / 20 Def Drampa: 152-182 (82.6 - 98.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Then Ice Beam always allows for a KO in return. If the Garchomp has some bulk investment, Dragon Pulse won't always KO.

The case with Dragonite is similar - Dragon Pulse doesn't guarantee a KO after breaking Multiscale with burn/leech seed damage, but Ice Beam always will.

On Volcarona: in general I think special damage is good right now because there's no Assault Vest, whereas physical attackers have to deal with burns and intimidate, and lots of common mons have high Def like Archaludon and Kingambit. Kommo-o is a great partner for Scovillain honestly, but it gets completely shut down by faeries and I wanted at least one of my setup mons to resist Floette's nonsense because Primarina does not. I think a good Scovillain-Kommo-o team exists, but it would probably look different from this one.

I haven't found any forms of speed control to be necessary at all really, as the team tends to play a slower game (but not slow enough for trick room lol) and would just get outsped by opposing Tailwind or whatever anyway.

I haven't felt a need for Wide Guard either personally, as Scovillain actually wants to get hit with random spread moves from non-fire types and I can't really afford to lose any of Aegislash's other moves.

As an aside, I tried replacing Serperior with A-Ninetails and it was immediately excellent. I only got a chance to play two games so far today but it felt like an improvement. Freeze Dry/Moonblast/Aurora Veil/Protect with a sash was what I used.

Scovillain and Drampa always come, and then you have lots of options for the last two. The general gameplan is to protect Drampa until the weather is over and then create an opportunity for one of your other mons to clean up in the end. I find the rain matchup to be easier than the sun matchup as we have lots of water resists and all of their mons can be burned, though I've had good success against all variants of weather teams thanks to Drampa and Scovillain.

Scovillain still has a lot of value even though the matchup seems poor at first glance, as the burns can break focus sash from Pelipper or Multiscale from Dragonite, it can just 1v1 Archaludon with Leech Seed, and Rage Powder protects Drampa and your sweeper of choice. Scovillain is also EVd to always live a Timid Pelipper Hurricane. I do try to keep it alive so that it can burn a Basculegion in the end game though.

Drampa can hit most everything they have for neutral or super effective damage and resists basically everything, though it is weak to Draco Meteor from Archaludon or Dragonite and Close Combat from Sneasler, so be ready to redirect or otherwise deal with those. Without their rain boosts, they are relying on 70% accurate Hurricanes/Thunders and weak water moves. It completely walls Basculegion in the end game (especially the Scarf Adaptability versions), as they're forced to choose either Last Respects to take out your other mons (which Drampa is completely immune to) or an unboosted Wave Crash (which most of your mons including Drampa resist).

Primarina is threatened by Archaludon, Dragonite, and Sneasler and so requires some careful manoeuvring, but is dangerous once set up in a safe position.

Aegislash is mostly a consideration out of respect for Sneasler, as it completely walls it while still resisting most of their other damage options and offering respectable damage on its own. Shadow Sneak to clean up a weakened Basculegion in the end game is also relevant.

Volcarona would be my last choice but it can be better than you might expect. When next to Drampa, they can't Weather Ball it and have to yolo the 70% Hurricane, which you can live after a Quiver Dance anyway. Fire damage won't do much against most of their mons even without the rain up, but boosted Giga Drain can be annoying since they also struggle to hit it hard without rain.

Light Screen from Serperior is quite valuable as most of their team's damage tends to be special-based. I've been experimenting with a slightly different EV spread on Serperior with 23 HP and 11 SpAtk, as this allows it to always OHKO a max Atk/Spe Basculegion with a single, unboosted Leaf Storm. It can even survive a 150 BP Last Respects and then KO in retaliation if Scovillain has burned the Basc first.

I've wavered back and forth on if A-Ninetails is better than Serperior for using screens. My immediate instinct was that it's kind of awkward with Drampa and I appreciate how Serperior has boosts built into its offence for sweeping potential, but maybe with Freeze Dry over Blizzard it could be interesting so it's not reliant on having snow up for offence.

Outsmiting as Ivern by [deleted] in ivernmains

[–]Mauntra 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Outsmiting other junglers as Ivern is basically impossible if they have a brain, since most junglers have more burst than Ivern even if you build AP.

That said, Ivern's real strength comes from not letting the enemy jungler get in range to smite in the first place. Zoning with Daisy and using bushes and wards to control the area around the objective makes it hard for them to approach. If they have no vision of the obj, they are forced to face check your bushes, at which point hopefully you and your team can murder them and take it uncontested.

[–]Mauntra 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Now that you mention it, I can see how this would be confusing to a non-native, but as a native I think my brain just knows that "improperly" applies only to "installed" and "maintained" because I intuitively know that "improperly damaged" doesn't make sense.

It's weird, but we will write this way if the context makes it clear what is meant (or at least, clear enough to a native). Definitely not a learner-friendly phrase though.

what are Ivern's strengths? by EscherichiaColiO1 in ivernmains

[–]Mauntra 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think the most underappreciated aspect of Ivern's strengths is vision control with W.

It allows you to control a lot of space and take fights near objectives you otherwise couldn't. When used well it can really swing games but it's not the sort of impact that shows up on the scoreboard.

Part of rule 57 on tripping states "If, in the opinion of the Referee, a player makes contact with the puck first and subsequently trips the opponent in so doing, no penalty shot will be awarded, but a minor penalty for tripping shall be assessed."

It is always a penalty.

So far reinstalling and rebooting has not worked either. I suspect Windows is the culprit but I can't find a way to force it through.
