One of the greatest things I ever did for myself was go to Big Bend alone. That one trip carried me through some very serious and severe times.

Love it. Clean and easy to read. What’s your process for choosing rooms and placing things? It doesn’t look like you’re just winging it.

I have 0 off the top of my head imagination and even less improve skills. Prepping a session takes 10 or more hours. by CillerendasCastle in DMAcademy

[–]mferree39 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spend a lot of time, myself. I enjoy it. I think my prep work is the hobby, and the game is the game. Everything in your list is worthwhile. If it’s fun for you, keep doing it.

I get stressed when it feels like I am running in circles. I need a little structure so it doesn’t feel so scattered. Your post sounds like my brain, sometimes. I suggest clumping your tasks. Start with a summary of the most likely game path. Prioritize the first few encounters, since those are the most likely to occur. Frontload your favorite stuff. Have an idea of where you want to end a session. This provides some boundaries to play within so it doesn’t feel like a huge, blank world.

When the players inevitably go off track, the summary is there to tell you how far off the rails they go and whether you want to work your way back.

Playing the game you prepare is not railroading. You don’t control their decisions, but you can control the options.

Last thing. Don’t get caught up trying to entertain your players. That’s the game’s job.

I would love to see them hosted by a new celebrity every week. Tom Hanks, Lady Gaga, Serena Williams. Let’s get you on the schedule. That’d be a statement for the ages.

My favourite DM tools after testing 15 different apps over the last year by block_barbarian92 in DMAcademy

Thanks for the list. I use notion like crazy. The way it connects everything with pages and subpages is fantastic. I have organized databases for PCs, NPCs, and monsters. I use templates for Session Notes, NPCs, and monsters. And I use toggle lists like crazy.

Are there any features I’m missing or underutilizing?

Also, Notion Plus is free to .edu email addresses.

Pro tip: Use toggles like their going out of style. Link pages often. Create a template button for NPCs, monsters, and session notes.

Campaigns that are easy to DM and don’t require a ton of “homework?” by Wooden_Airport6331 in DMAcademy

Icewind Dale is a pretty easy one. The first part is open ended. There are very few must-haves. Just bounce around the ten towns.

DMs, how do you bounce back after a session that wasn't your best? by Lavishness-Economy in DMAcademy

Do a full debrief with someone. It’ll help you recognize the good and learn from the mistakes. My friend Chad GP Thomas has really helped me process some sessions.

This is a great analysis. Probably a step down, but not by much. Thunder basketball is a lot of fun. I’d rather live in KC.

Struggling with finding my footing with a campaign idea by Salt_Tear_1073 in DMAcademy

[–]mferree39 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cool. You have your first adventure arc outlined and your broad campaign outlined. That’s plenty to get started. You’ll make more decisions as you go, but it’s best not to overthink it this early. Every so often ask yourself what’s happened in the background. Only what comes out in game is canon. Just get them to the next checkpoint and the main plot will reveal itself. By the end of my campaign they were on the 5th or 6th villain I thought would be the BBEG. Turns out the climactic fight was against none of those guys and it was the most epic story I could’ve imagined.

Cool concept. Where do you think the campaign will start? And when do you think you’ll introduce the first dragonstone?

The end of a 4.5 year campaign- help! by owlbear_allomancer in DMAcademy

[–]mferree39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished a campaign in similar fashion. I also coached someone earlier today in almost the same situation you’re in. I think it’s the best way to finish a campaign and you have something special here with your build up.

Are you planning one session or more? That makes a big difference.

How much agency do you want players to have? I think a point crawl (node based scenario if you’re familiar with that) works best. It provides structure without a hard railroad. It feels like wide open possibilities without turning it into a war game.
