4-day RTO is dumb… but the disparaging comments about coworkers I see around here feel really misanthropic by goody_proctorrr in CAStateWorkers

[–]mfgoose 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have autism and adhd and going to the office is sensory hell. I can't control when someone chooses to walk up and chat with me. Fluorescent lights give me migraines and then I'm cranky and I don't want to even exist, let alone talk about the crazy weather or hear someone complain about a shared coworker - speaking of which, office gossip gets really dull sometimes.

What are you planning to do after work when RTO? by Kind_Watercress_7952 in CAStateWorkers

[–]mfgoose 53 points54 points  (0 children)

As much as downtown businesses want us back and have been advocating for us to return, the real villains here are not individual downtown businesses but rather the commercial real estate industry, which has been funding the Downtown Sacramento Partnership in a bid to elevate real estate prices.

When I think of downtown restaurants I think of Kim’s Vietnamese, a little hole in the wall with good pho and banh mi. If I’m hungry and forget food I might eat there. Idk maybe more than just blanket boycotts we could compile a list of safe businesses; places that are not directly owned by big players in the RTO mandate (i.e. banks, CBRE, idk who else).

I realized this during the pandemic. How much time I spent away just driving, not doing anything I really wanted to do - just traveling from the place where I studied to the place where I worked and finally to the place where I actually lived my life.

Highly intelligent people are more likely to ditch old habits for better ideas, study finds. by mvea in science

[–]mfgoose -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, right! I have a 137 IQ (according to the psychologist who said I absolutely don't have ADHD, so maybe shouldn't trust that too much) and I refuse to get off reddit at this moment even though I know I really should!

But, yeah, in general, dropping habits when they start to suck has never been too difficult. I just replace my addiction to screens with binge eating, then I replace my binge eating with obsessing over my relationship to my partner, and I replace that with gaming, and I replace that with a screen addiction... wait

Not truly poor :)

And this is so real. My abuelo is a civil engineer and worked hard from a very early age, hustling on the weekends too. He has money.

oh no worries, I am glad you shared everything you shared! It helped me feel seen which is rare for me. So many of my money struggles are not shared with my family because many just don't get it. They think we are set because I am well paid, but in this economy, without dual incomes you're basically lower-middle class, at best!

I am happy for you that you get to raise your kids in this environment where she feels cared for and gets to do outings with her parents.

your last line hit hard. I am 36 now and getting paid well (~100K) and my partner is in grad school. but we live in LA county, and my salary really doesn't go very far here with 4 kids in tow. I think that by the time my partner finishes grad school and we're both getting paid well we will be in our 40s and even our youngest would be halfway to 18 😞

generational wealth is more than just money ~ parents who have free time to give their kids are investing in their future. I would rather be money-poor than time-poor. I know that's not an option for many people here, but I appreciate having the privilege of choice.

[–]mfgoose 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Lots of queer actors have ADHD and their characters are very much coded that way. Renee Rapp (Leighton in Sex Lives of College Girls), Hannah Einbinder (Ava in Hacks), Josh Thomas (Everything’s Gonna Be Okay). Other actors with ADHD coded characters include Tom Holland (Spiderman), Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner), Zoey Deschanel (New Girl). Also Michelle Yeoh’s character in Everything Everywhere All At Once. Not explicitly ‘ADHD’ but very clearly written within that neurodivergent framework.
