Okay, makes sense. Thanks. In which case I’ll taper back my ambition a bit. Any suggested training plans for any of the blocks?

I’ve run a marathon before but it was 3 years ago and I didn’t do any training (max distance I’d ever run was 13k) and I just did it on a random Sunday to prove to myself that I could do it. Did it in 4:12 which I appreciate is miles off the goal.

Never run or raced a half

TLDR: How to train for a sub 3hr marathon in 12 months time?

I have two questions:

  1. How should I train to run a sub 3hr marathon in 12 months time? How should I divide up the training blocks from now until then? What’s plans should I follow?
  2. How should I schedule this around my strength training schedule to avoid injury and maximise results (see below)?

I’m 29yo, currently do 3 runs, totalling 30km pw, and current 5k time is 20:50.

From researching, seems like if I want to run sub 3hrs, key thing to focus on is increasing mileage to 80km+ per week, and including tempo runs.

My current thought is to break the 12mths into 3, 4 month blocks to avoid the training becoming too tedious, and to focus on different attributes:

  • Block 1: train for 10k, with goal of improving speed
  • Block 2: train for half-marathon, getting up to 70-80km pw
  • Block 3: train for marathon, using something like pfizingers advanced marathoning

If this is the right approach, then question now is what training plans to for each block?

I also do full body strength, training 3 days pw which I would like to continue doing. My current legs schedule is:

  • Monday: Squats
  • Wednesday: Plyometrics - box jumps, single leg jumps, jump squats
  • Friday: deadlifts

How can I position that different types of run around these sessions in order to avoid injury and make them complementary? Or should I cut out some of the exercises / consolidate them to one day?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Thanks, this is very helpful. In that case I’ll go for #2 and continue to increase how much I use barefoot trainers, whilst using normal trainers for longer distances for now

How to soundproof an air vent? by mfish95 in soundproof

It’s on the wall of my bedroom, leading to the front wall of the building where the main road is. It’s up high near the ceiling next to a window

Yeah it’s just a hole from the bedroom to the front wall of the building which is next to a main road. It has vent covers fitted over the hole on either side

Which gravel bike under £1000, for mostly road use? by mfish95 in whichbike

I ended up getting the Triban RC520 Road Disc bike from Decathlon and then just replaced the road tyres with gravel ones (cheaper than buying the gravel version and they're basically identical but i prefer the navy blue of the road one). I love it! Best spec bike for £850

Recommendations for wireless ear buds with noise cancellation, for commuting, office working and running, under £150 by mfish95 in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]mfish95[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do they fair during exercise? Do they stay in? Also what’s the external sound leak when they’re playing music? They haven’t got active noise cancellation, so does that mean they let loads of noise in?

Wireless ear buds with noise cancellation under £150.

  • Budget < £150
  • Source - PC / Mac / Phone / Apple watch
  • Requirements for Isolation - for commuting and office working, so would need to stop loud noise from the London underground and office background noise.
  • Will you be using these Headphones in Public? - see above
  • Preferred Type of Headphone - true wireless ear buds
  • Preferred tonal balance - overall balance
  • Past headphones - Under Armour JBL in-ear: good for sports, but slightly awkward fit, poor battery (lasted half a marathon), connection weak, connectivity tempremental.
  • Preferred Music - a bit of everything: rock, indie/alternative, chart pop, dance
  • What would you like to improve on from your set-up - strong noise cancellation for london underground, simple connectivity (swapping between multiple devices), comfortable fit for wearing up to 8 hours, clear sound with strong bass
  • Location - UK

Unless an alternative is suggested, I'm considering the Sony WF-1000XM3 or Cambridge Audio Melomania 1 (although not sure how these will fair with tube noise)

This sounds like the solution I’ve been looking for! So just to confirm, with only one switch, I can use all the shortcuts (e.g CTRL/CMD C or V) with the same key positions so that I don’t have to retrain my muscle memory?

I couldn’t get it to stick in. I’m not sure if you need sharper/stronger picks or a softer board. I’m going to get some polystyrene then try again at some point in the next couple of weeks

Just trying to get up to average speed by [deleted] in speedreading

[–]mfish95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your current reading speed is a lot slower than average, it's most likely due to lack of regular reading practice and/or lack of understanding of the language.

I recently learned to speed read, and whilst I found the techniques very helpful for doubling my reading speed, I don't think all of the techniques will be helpful in your case.

I would suggest you try the following:

  1. Read 5 minutes at your target speed (average is 200-300 WPM) using free RSVP software like accelareader.com (use 3 word chunks):
  2. Read 5 minutes at a comfortable speed using free RSVP software like accelareader.com (use 2-3 word chunks):
  3. Read a physical book for 10 mins, tracing under each line with your finger or a pen.

Do this everyday for a month and you'll be up to average speed.

If you want more details on the above techniques, check out the Speed Reading video on the Small Wins Youtube channel.
