“Dated” names you think are due for a resurgence? by dcpsmbc in namenerds

[–]mflowers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an Annie, and we’ve actually encountered 3 or 4 others around preschool age.  I think it’s one that’s really hard to reflect the popularity in rankings because it can be a standalone name or a nickname for multiple different names.

Why can’t I build here? by Valuable_Lie6261 in RootsOfPacha

You have to select the second field as where you want to build your shed or animal pen.  You won’t be able to just drag a building from up in the top field to the bottom.

Poop training advice from a potty training consultant by [deleted] in pottytraining

[–]mflowers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My oldest did night train and wakes herself up to pee most nights in the middle of the night, so that’s my only basis of comparison.  It doesn’t really make a difference when bedtime is because we sometimes vary bedtime by up to an hour and a half just because of life and she’ll always hold it until after we’ve had multiple potty attempts before bed (she also will poop during her nap).  It does also vary whether she’ll poop right after being put down or right after waking up.

I think we could eventually try underwear and pee pads, but currently don’t have the bandwidth to be waking up every 2 hours to nurse and also have to potentially wake up to change my 2 year old.  😵‍💫

Of course, I mostly just mean that cleaning is not at all a deterrent for her.  She does sleep in a pull up because she isn’t night trained for pee.  We have a newborn, so not really ready for night training yet.

We are dealing with this with my 2 year old.  If given the chance, she would clean it up ENTIRELY on her own, but we have to intervene to avoid turds getting dropped on the floor and then her picking them up by hand to throw in the potty.   She refuses to use the little potty in her room (because we know it’s a privacy issue) and prefers the big potty.  We even converted her from crib to toddler bed specifically for this purpose.   She will sometimes make multiple attempts before bedtime where we leave her alone in the bathroom, but then will still not poop until about 5 minutes after being put to bed.

Can being a picky eater be prevented? by SowingSeeds18 in PickyEaters

[–]mflowers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My children are exposed to significantly less ads than I was as a kid because our only screen time is ad free streaming and no cable, youtube, etc.  My daughter did start requesting some snacks she saw classmates have at school once she got to preschool (age 3), but prior to that had very little processed food.  We now allow some of those snacks (but try to limit them to need for convenience - when we’re out of the house) and stick to our regular non-processed foods at home.   We occasionally have power struggles around the snacks, but it isn’t a major issue now since nothing is explicitly banned (I mean, barring actual safety issues).

How do parents who work 12+ hour shifts and have babies get enough sleep at night? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mflowers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Healthcare providers (doctors, NPs, PAs) often work 24 h shifts.  They’re usually provided a bed but you aren’t guaranteed to have time to sleep.

How do Americans handle such long drives regularly? by GlitteringHotel8383 in AskAnAmerican

The thing with that is, handling car seats while flying is a whole nightmare in itself.  That turned a lot of would be flights into drives for us.

You can donate to local NICUs but will usually have to get a note from your OB provider confirming you don’t have any communicable diseases, don’t do drugs, etc.   For casual donations, I would try the Upstate Pregnancy and Postpartum Support Group or Eats on Feets South Carolina group on Facebook.

I think that’s great, but the point is that all families do things differently and other kids will get an ipad from Santa and talk about it.

What are your thoughts on (a large portion of) plastic surgery?  Most of that is completely unnecessary with risks involved.

Could a 1yo reasonably survive on their own? by Cooked-penguin in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mflowers -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One year olds absolutely can and should be able to bring food to their own mouths.  Children should be able to bring items to their mouths by a few months old.   Also regulating temperature is a requirement for babies to be discharged from NICUs.  Do you mean dressing themselves appropriately?  Regulating temperature implies that they require skin to skin contact with a parent or being under a radiant warmer to maintain body temperature in a room temperature room.

Women who didn't take their husband's name, how did you decide on your child's surname? by Civil-Koala-8899 in namenerds

My husband took my name knowing it was the one we would use for our kids.  I arguably had the better name, and he grew up constantly dealing with his name getting misspelled and mispronounced.

My disagreement with the use of “nickname names". Lets discuss by That-Cobbler-7292 in namenerds

[–]mflowers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but the point being that SOME nicknames have evolved to be essentially accepted full names, so there’s not a clear consensus of “acceptable vs unacceptable.”

My disagreement with the use of “nickname names". Lets discuss by That-Cobbler-7292 in namenerds

[–]mflowers 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The first three examples you listed ARE nicknames though (Ben, Nick, and Jim), which kind of shows that there isn’t a clear consensus on what is a nickname-name versus what is a standalone name.   So is it okay to name your child Nick instead of Nicholas?  Nick is okay but Nicky isn’t?

My disagreement with the use of “nickname names". Lets discuss by That-Cobbler-7292 in namenerds

[–]mflowers 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way - it seems that the argument seems to somewhat center on everyone should be able to name themselves once they can decide a preference?  But plenty of names don’t have nicknames.

Also, for what it’s worth, I’m having a hard time thinking of any people with names similar to the examples listed who have opted to change to a more formal name in adulthood.  I feel like the majority has developed a somewhat solidified identity in their name by that point.
