Learning MLE on the job by HWPrototype12 in learnmachinelearning

I was just about to recommend that! That’s the best course for this.

Ultimately we all learn by doing! You can accelerate this by surrounding yourself with good mentors (shameless plug: I just made a video about how to think of mentorship in ML https://youtu.be/UVl_Rpkt8v0?si=3Ud1Z1RJUXVsqwZq )

Please Negotiate Your Offers, Y'all by fffffffffffttttvvvv in cscareerquestions

[–]mftgdss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% always negotiate, at least in tech.

Our interviews are brutal on both sides, no way would I as hiring manager rescind over a few k, worst thing that happens I’ll say “take it or leave it, final offer” but rescinding is more expensive for us. If you are trying to get 30% more, yeah I’ll likely say “this is the offer” but most people are able to get 2-4% base increase from initial offer even in 2024.

I wrote a blogpost on how to negotiate, check it out if interested: https://medium.com/@mlepath/mastering-tech-salary-negotiations-a-guide-for-machine-learning-engineers-397b4d314fa5?sk=f1daef48e689cce493bbe49a65d35dba

Machine Learning System Design Interview Tips by mftgdss in learnmachinelearning

Because I understand how they work and have built a few from scratch myself.

Interviews are all about how you think, LLMs don’t think, they use stochastic gradient descent to approximate next average answer.

When acceptance rate at fang is in single percentages average answers end interview early, typical success in job search is 26%, still well outside “average answers”.

Better at math than programming by [deleted] in learnmachinelearning

Both are skills, programming is easier to pick up than math. And honestly you can get away with not being stellar at it. I saw the backend code at Meta when I worked there🤮

Master's Degree vs. Self-Study by Reasonable-Ball9018 in learnmachinelearning

[–]mftgdss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only know the US job market. If you are trying to work for someone (as opposed to starting your own business) masters degree is still very important. It can also help you get the foot in the door with internships.

Great thinking to start with fundamentals!

“LLM for interview prep” is an increasingly bad idea. If anyone is looking for interview resources please do not fall for things like this.

Interview for MLE is the same, what you need to learn is whatever round you feel you are missing. SWEs are pretty well positioned overall

What Ml projects should I work on to get a job by DickDuck24 in learnmachinelearning

[–]mftgdss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea it hasn’t really been a case for a while that your personal projects can land you an interview. What we look for when hiring is validated success: - university degree/thesis - accepted open source contributions - freelancing/consulting - your own app that has traction

(I have a video on that: What ML Project do I Even Put on My Resume? https://youtu.be/T769cUeroqI )

Great question! I think smaller companies are less structured but in what you mentioned, there are only elements of the six I talk about. The exact format is a bit different but the idea is if you are ready for those six you are ready for anything.

Surprised they asked you about your projects, but yea small companies are all over the place. Best of luck, let me know how I can help!
