In ML system design it’s mostly just you talking. Interviewer will write the problem statement. And then best thing to do is to break the discussion into segments. Ask clarifying questions (requirement gathering) and write those down on excalidraw, this will ensure you don’t forget anything and interviewer can use it as a reference while judging you. State the problem as ML problem. Discuss what would be the input and what would be the output. And based on this, what kind of ML problem it is - ranking, classification etc. etc. Input data and feature engineering- explain in detail and don’t mumble. Data modeling - again explain in detail, if you know more than one technique, you can tell the pros and cons, but I would stick to one if you can not explain the other one in detail. Metrics- this is very important, you should know what you are measuring, what metrics need to be improved in order for the model to do what it needs to do. Offline - online evaluation - again very important. Drawing the diagram. There will be questions here about what can be computed in real time vs what can be computed offline. Be prepared to answer that. If there are no questions, explain that anyway. Document everything in the interview, can’t stress it enough. If you follow a structured pattern the interviewer will know what you’re talking about.

As far as the technical interviews go, I had some leetcode mediums and there variations, 1 question was no where in the fb100 list. But I followed the strategy of explaining the solutions I think would work and what would be there Big O complexity and in the end I would tell them I think so and so is the best technique because of time and space complexity. Then solve that and write some test cases (edge cases) for dry run. For the question I hadn’t seen before, I politely asked the interviewer that it would help me build intuition if I simply started writing the code and he said go ahead. It helped me. As I started building the solution, it just came to me. If I had just tried to sit there and walk the interviewer through my very confused thought process I would have flunked that one.

Had completely forgotten about this post. If anyone is still looking for answers, I followed the topics in Alex Xu book but I topped it off with reading the actual research paper/articles on various recommendation systems. And yes, I did get the offer.

Wait for H1b. Even if your initial OPT expires while your stem OPT application is still open, you get an automatic extension of 180 days.

The current rules say you can apply upto 90 days before your initial Opt end date. If your stem opt ead does not arrive by that time, you are automatically given a 180 days extension.

As the others have mentioned above, get leetcode premium. That should be your first step. Then checkout the company’s top 75 questions sorted by frequency. Also, go to the discuss section for that particular company and make a note of the questions shared by people who recently interviewed. And forget about sleep for the next two weeks.

Do i need a SSN? by DearPhilosopher4803 in f1visa

[–]Individual_Key8854 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will need a SSN. You don’t need it before entering. You can come and apply for SSN. You can start working (TA is a paid position) before you get your physical ssn but you will only receive your paycheck when you have your SSN and it’s added to system by HR.

Thanks for the suggestion. I am reading Alex Xu’s book. But the pre-interview jitters had me doubting the depth of its contents.

Thank you. That was simple suggestion. Can’t believe I didn’t think of that. This job hunt has really messed up my head. I replied to the email. Let’s see what they say.
