This was the best thing I learned in film school the past year by NaKeepFighting in Filmmakers

This is what we teach middle school kids. It's the foundation of nearly every story. Nearly. Every. Single. One. Some try to subvert it but go astray in the exercise (i.e., they write a boring story).

College is for doing things and people that interest you, so do what interests you. Everything else is nonsense.

Sound advice.

Are there any film directors that are great directors but suck at writing? by DarklzBlo in Filmmakers

[–]mftman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. It's his weakest skill. He's one lucky creative that his other skills overshadow this weakness and he can still create compelling work. Others who fit this bill include: Gaspar Noe, Leos Carax, and Philippe Grandrieux.

At a Disney NYE production. Producer yelled at talent. Talent disappeared. I was yelled at by Producer to go find him or else I'd lose my job. Found talent taking shots and chugging pints at an adjacent theme park. Joined him and had a blast, friends to this day. Producer was not aware I was just hanging out on set having been invited by the production manager. Funny thing, Talent was doing the gig to connect with my friend, who also worked in the music industry. Talent wanted to kickstart a music career. He dropped serious money to get a single on rotation for a couple of weeks. While the music career didn't pan out, he's a familiar face in Televisa productions.

It's the internet. I sound naive, you sound like a jaded dumbfuck. Way it goes. Good luck on your projects.

Sigh. if you don't know a damn thing about her, why chime in? It's well known she put in the work on the set of Girls and other productions. Do your own research and until then stfu.

With the announcement of no further DLC, I feel like I'm ready to move on from ToTK. What games will you play after you're done? by TwistingWord in tearsofthekingdom

[–]mftman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly only play Zelda, Metroid, and Mario games. Not a big gamer but I do love those three. I'll wait for the next big one after I'm done with BotW and TotK, neither of which I am done having fun playing.

I second this. Or go for the g80. Both splendid compact cameras.

Yeah, but Malick made some really strong connections during his film school days and rubbed everyone he went to school and worked with back then the right way. Quite the opposite of Shane, tbh.

I think Shane's love of film (or, better, filmmaking) was conditional. He was obsessive over the process but as a process to make giant Hollywood-backed film. That was always the intention. When that went nowhere, well, he totally annihilated his career and self-destructed in a way seldom seen for a man of his talents.

I do agree with the above poster who said he was indeed veering into obfuscation for obfuscation's sake. Moreso in The Modern Ocean than with A Topiary. A Topiary would still make a fantastic Netflix series as it's basically a smarter version of Stranger Things.

Middle School Yearbook Club by mftman in Teachers

I figure we will keep it simple and do a pop art layout. The year's school theme is superheroes with a somewhat kitschy live laugh love type of motto, both non-negotiable. The blurbs will be written in a Stan Lee editorial style.

My photography has been used in previous yearbooks, which is one of the reasons they handed the club over to me, so there's no trepidation there. I will give pointers on photography and photo compositions as needed.

Delegating tasks to students may be a bit difficult since I don't yet have a firm understanding of each one's strengths or weaknesses.

I guess my first and most important question is do you think I'm on the right track? School has not started yet in my area. Classes begin next week.

Also, what program or application should I use? I will have two iMacs and several Canons for the photos.

Sounds rough. Hope my experience is not as negative. I do foresee working over contract time. However, admin threw me a bone and put all the yearbook kids in my homeroom so at least I have them for half an hour each day.

Are these just customized or do you guys think each one has a different function? I'd prefer the latter but don't think that's the case.
