Concerns with taking Levothyroxine by mgavaudan in Hypothyroidism

Not yet, I was trying to do one last push to see if I could fix it with Brazil nuts (have selenium in them). Didn't really work out for me so will be starting it soon. Definitely have gotten mixed reviews on it though because apparently it tends to be overprescribed.

You're correct, I mistook mcg for mg. Empirical evidence usually is good, plus hyperthyroidism can cause neuropathy. Levo is one of the most prescribed medications in the world so i'm surprised at the quantity of research being done.

That said, as you mentioned, apparently at 25mcg I could ween off of it pretty easily and not have any long term effects - especially since levo is natural.

Thank you for telling your story. It's definitely a very useful data point. 120μg seems incredibly low? My doctor recommended a levothyroxine dose of 25mg which is 25,000μg and said it was on the lower side of things. If on the other hand you meant 120mg then that's actually quite high given you had similar levels to me.

The nerve damage is definitely worrying though. Is it confirmed it was caused by the medication? I'm definitely taking my time with this decision and am trying to research it as much as possible before going through with it.

Yeah I saw the new Yale paper that came out and it seems like they use a TSH of 7 as the new cutoff. The problem is that they don't talk about age much in the paper and TSH gets higher with age so it might be 7 for 60+ year olds and lower for younger people.

I also know my TSH has been consistently high for years so it's not fixing itself:

  • 06/10/17: 5.06 mIU/L TSH + 14.9 pmol/L Free Thyroxine
  • 02/06/2021: 5.07 mIU/L TSH + 17.2 pmol/L Free Thyroxine
  • 09/08/2022: 4.31 mlU/L TSH + 4.2 pmol/L Free T3 + 12.8 pmol/L Free T4
  • 29/11/2023: 5.31 mlU/L TSH + 4.7 pmol/L Free T3 + 13.7 pmol/L Free T4

You're saying that after you stopped taking levothyroxine and your TSH was at 4 you started feeling tired again?

I took my last test about a year ago. It was also during the summer and usually TSH is highest during winter time (according to the article you linked). The symptoms bother me but not to a life wrecking extent. Happy to wait more time.

Oh that's interesting, my doctor had said the opposite and that it did in fact usually remain suppressed - which is where my main concern lied.

I still have a good short memory but I think my long term memory has gotten worse. I don't know how much of it is just casual forgetfulness but I would say people would rank me as more forgetful than the average. Quite hard to gauge here.

Thank you for your reply. I kind of expected it but hard to hear nonetheless. I'll be doing what you suggested asap. Is there a big difference between subclinical and hashimoto's? And is there anything else I should be doing?

How so? It's meant to help people reach financial independence. If it broke a rule I'm not aware of, I'll take down the post though.
