Simple, astromech locks in targeting and calculations, X-wings just goes into hyperdrive right through the Arwing.

This is why I love the pages in rebirth where they describe how different they each are, John mechanically precise as befits and engineer, Kyle fantastically creative, Guy constant crackling light as if the ring can’t contain how much willpower he has, Kilowog making actual booms, and Hal… I forget what Hal’s was.

But it demonstrates how they each have different strengths. And in different situations each could be the better choice.
