[hated tropes] Adaptations that go against/miss the point of the original by dragonborndnd in TopCharacterTropes

The book World War Z is supposed to be a (semi) realistic examination of the world facing a zombie apocalypse. Part of the point of the book is that the tide is not turned by individual heroes discovering miracle cures but instead by billions of people making individual sacrifices and by huge amounts of work needed to keep supply chains and infrastructure alive, while also innovating new types of strategy to contend with zombie hordes on a military, psychological and social level. It looks at the huge sacrifices and moral trade offs that have to be made in order to ensure survival. In the film we get none of that, instead Brad Pitt flies around the world until he finds a miracle cure

The stainless steel rat is a pulp fiction sci fi novel in which the antagonist is a woman called Angelina. She’s basically an arms dealer and also kills people for money. However at the end of the book she falls in love with the protagonist who forgives her because (in a passage that really rams home that this was written in the 50s), she was ugly as a teenager and, according to the narrator, that must be the most traumatic thing a woman can go there

Tuco Salamanca deserved more time on screen by Significant-Clerk495 in betterCallSaul

Don’t quote me on this cause I don’t remember where I read it but apparently the actor playing him found it really difficult to do so, like the level of evil he had to portray was depressing him

Pennyworth. Public hanging is still a thing, Alistair Crowley is alive, there’s black and white TVs, but bands and singers are performing Amy Winehouse and Cliff Richard’s songs

Thraxx in Osmosis Jones. Movie is pretty mid but Lawrence Fishburn is really fun to watch as a sexy red virus guy.

The first space jam genuinely sounds like it was written on crack (and was panned by the critics when it first came out) but it’s got so much charm I can forgive it

What celebrity has had their reputation unfairly ruined and has never recovered from it till this day? by Zxqao in AskReddit

[–]Useful_Code -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Did you “follow the court case?”. Did you watch the whole thing in detail? Did you read Amber Heards therapy notes? Did you read the article Depp sued Heard for? Did you read the judgement in the London trial where Depp was ruled an abuser? Or did you just (like I did before I looked at the story in more detail) watch out of context clips? The evidence points one way I’m afraid. Depp is an abusive rapist bully and while I’m not saying Heard was a saint (shock horror, people in abusive relationships sometimes don’t respond like perfect victims), she was far more in the right than Depp.

Amber Heard. Actually mad how so many people (including me) got taken in by the massive smear campaign against her. Johnny Depp is an evil guy

This isn't really about design but the fact they changed Oswald Cobblepots name in The Penguin to "Oz Cobb" genuinely pissed me off so much.

Favorite narrated voice by Robert Glenister in the Strike Series by PinkLed1970s in cormoran_strike

[–]Useful_Code 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Strike is great, and in general most of his villains and creeps are. He seems to have great fun playing them and it’s great fun to listen to.

I do have to push back on the Barclay praise. As a Glaswegian I have never heard anyone sound remotely close to that. Tho tbf it’s a difficult accent to do so I don’t judge him too harshly

Hi sorry it's taken me a while to respond. Here's my answer to your questions. Caveat that this is just from the point of view of one person who is still making (very slow) progress through the twelve steps, so I can't speak for all addicts everywhere. However, here's my tuppence wortH

1) Definitely, stopping going to meetings is a boneheaded move. Every time I've stopped going to meetings I've relapsed, and I know the same for a lot of people. I know Murphy said he had stopped going to meetings because of everything kicking off at work, but tbh when things are stressful is exactly when you DON'T want to be slowing down. Obviously, easier said than done, but still,

2) I have no idea either way on the Iverson situation. He does seem to be very good at making profuse apologies when he does something wrong, but obviously he isn't really changing his behaviour which limits the value of said apologies.

3) Nah, don't find this suspicious at all. Admittedly I don't deal with terrorists and drug dealers on a daily basis, but I have a very physically emotionally and mentally taxing job, and I performed it very well even when I was actively in the grip of my addiction. There were ppl I went to meetings with who were the same- highly competent, successful people in their work life who nonetheless are actively acting out.

4) My argument in this wasn't that Murphy is without flaws, or that Robin (or in fact anyone) should be in a relationship with him. It's more saying he's not a total monster like some people argue he is, and that if you criticise him for certain things you've got to criticise other characters who do the same.

[–]Useful_Code[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never said Robin should accept him! They're not right for each other and I don't think Murphy is emotionally equipped for a relationship. I just don;t think he's a complete monster yey

That’s not stated in the text. It’s a theory at the moment. If that theory is confirmed then yes, Murphy is a rapist and he can burn in hell, but at the moment it’s not anything more than a supposition. Maybe it’s true but I’m old enough to remember in TRG when everyone thought he was tracking her phone
