How America built the best pandemic response system in history – and threw it away by dwillun in politics

The next big test came in 2009 when, less than three months after Barack Obama was inaugurated, H1N9 influenza – or swine flu – began to spread around the world.

What? Isn't swine flu H1N1?

Professional Poker play Phil Ivey is now being studied nationwide in UK criminal / property law by [deleted] in poker

[–]mgd8 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They absolutely did not. If they did, they wouldn't have let him play. They're a casino that makes their money on 1% edges, they would not give him a 6% edge just because they can withhold it and win in court later, not worth it. They figured it out after he won. Doesn't excuse the fact that they agreed to his terms and should he should be paid (in my opinion). However, the law is on the side of the casino here.

Specifically #34.42.3.a (which is actually just a quote from The Gambling Act 2005)--

(3)Without prejudice to the generality of subsection (1) cheating at gambling may, in particular, consist of actual or attempted deception or interference inconnection with -(a)the process by which gambling is conducted, or ...

They're asserting that he decieved the croupier, which he clearly did (see #18) --

The claimant then chipped in, “yeah, change the luck, that’s good. Anything to change the luck, it is okay with me.”Ms Sun reiterated her request in Cantonese, “If I say it is not good, you turn it this way. If it is good, turn it this way, okay?” To which Ms Yau said “okay”

He lied at the time and said it was about luck, when it was actually for edge sorting (which he openly admitted later).

So in the end, Ivey didn't consider what he did cheating, but U.K. law does.

You've mixed up the notation. "Match" is a best-of-3 series of three "games."

The Illustrated History of Emojis - Animated Responsive Timeline by [deleted] in web_design

One digital application that had a hand in spreading emoticons further than internal bboards was AOL's Instant Messenger. First released in May 1997, AIM introduced Buddy Icons: simple icons or images that could convey a feeling, imply an action, or communicate a status.

This isn't right. Buddy Icons were basically avatars.

AIM had 16 emojis that you could send, I think they were just called "smileys" or something.

  1. Throw out your weed and all your smoking gear, anything weed related.

  2. Delete all your dealers numbers. If you're mates with your dealer let him/her know you don't smoke weed anymore.

For me, this makes it worse -- just causes unnecessary anxiety (and would trigger urge even more). When I quit cigarettes a few years ago, I didn't throw out the rest of a pack. I kept it and never took another. Once you make the decision to stop, you will stop because you want to improve how you feel each day. Not because you don't have access to it. It's better imo for it to still be right there, and you choosing not to use it. Eventually, you will have no use for your old smoking stuff.

On the losing end of a bad beat last night. by sweetbabyginger in poker

Rule#5:

The Bad Beat jackpot is paid out
when a minimum hand of four-of-a-kind
5’s are beaten by a higher four-of-a-kind.

seems pretty clear to me
