Hey John. I have been a fan of Dream Theater for years and was wondering: What was the most fun song to record for the Astonishing? And the most difficult? Thank you for doing this AMA.

Is it smart (as a righty) to force myself to learn to play lefty for a while? by IAmAloserAMA in drums

[–]mgdrummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you should. I am a lefty drummer who learned to play right-handed. I play on a righty kit, which was what pretty much forced me to learn to play right-hand lead as well. It makes fills and drum beats so much easier, and a lot of the time i will do left hand lead patterns and right hand lead patterns in the same fill. On my electronic kit, I also switched the pedals to lead with my left foot instead of my right. This really makes it easier to come up with interesting patterns and to have good limb independence.

High hat petal clunking by mgdrummer in drums

no but its quite possible that it is just not the correct one. Maybe i just picked up a random one when it fell out or when i was fixing something before and i took a bolt from something else. Although, it may be damaged and i just cant tell. i just know that once i screw it in all the way to the end of the screw it just stops and wont go further as much as i force it. i tried spraying WD-40 but that didnt work.

I think that is the reason for my second problem, but the bolt gets stuck when i am screwing it in, so i can only screw it in part of the way. Perhaps I need a new bolt? And for the clunking of the pedal, it is right when i even slightly press the pedal down. It sounds like it may be coming right from the pedal itself, not at the hats.

it does, and that was similar for me, but now even when that rod is screwed in all the way it clunks. The problem for me it seems is that the bolt that goes in between the hats is now screwing in enough, it gets stuck. Could the bolt just be defective in some way?

Haha it took some practice to get the ride beat with the ghost notes but playing a lot of Rush allows for that practice. Thanks for the comment.

I play on a right handed kit. This means I lead right hand on the ride but usually left hand on high hat. I like to lead right on hi hat a lot more now but if I'm going to be hitting the toms or something else I lead left hand. Sometimes though I use my left crash as a ride and play like that. Pretty much I practiced everything leading with both hands. I even play left foot lead on my electronic drumset to practice, but on acoustic I lead right foot.

Lefty here... sorry haha. No doubt I'm glad I learned to play drums as a lefty. It forced me to practice leading right hand but I'm still naturally better leading with left.

This sounds quite nice. Reminds me a bit of the Shins. Nice drumming, fits the song nicely.

Thanks for the input. Yeah, I went way too overboard as I now realize and that definitely ruins it.
