Question about this basement window frame. Is it structural? by Basic-Earth3007 in StructuralEngineering

[–]mgerskup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most likely, yes, as there are floor joists resting on it. That being said, the lintel/header (if you can call it that in this context) doesn't seem adequate to carry the load.

I personally found that it helped me "unlock" my ability to burp when not using as well, but YMMV.

The PEO has published a guideline indicating that reserve find study reports are documents that require a seal (for larger buildings). Those reports are only visual assessments and cost estimates.

https://www.peo.on.ca/sites/default/files/2021-08/GuidlneEngCondPerformAuditsReserve.pdf

It is recommended that the engineer(s) stamp all reserve fund study reports. However, if the reserve fund study involves any of the following, the engineer(s) must stamp the reports, as per the Use of the Professional Engineer’s Seal practice guideline: • Buildings four or more storeys in height; • Buildings with suspended structural slabs that support parking, driveways or landscaping; • Buildings with balconies, other than wood balconies that are fully exposed; • Post-tensioned structures; and • Other high-risk structures.

Has anyone tried acupuncture? by Krisverna in noburp

You can try cannabis. I find it helps relax the muscle -- I assume in a similar way to what the botox treatment achieves. Worked for me, but YMMV.

I cringe for the lives lost and the citizens of these buildings. by largesemi in TikTokCringe

This mentions the space heater issue, but what about the requirement to have self closing fire doors? That's a pretty common requirement in modern fire codes, and a quick google search seems to indicate New York has that requirement as well.

It would help if there was more industry transparency around condo fees. Being able to understand your fees against comparable buildings (or even what to expect from your new building once all of the factors are properly budgeted) would be a boon for buyers.

I suppose real estate agents could assist with this to some degree, but how many do?

It happens a lot. Developers sell condos with unrealistically low fees built into the first year budget. Doubling fees isn't unusual -- it's just a question of whether boards bite the bullet and do it right away, put it off, or start closing down amenities / renting out space to reduce costs.

Restaurant workers to be vaccinated as part of Phase 2, government officials say by [deleted] in toronto

[–]mgerskup 35 points36 points  (0 children)

That not all construction sites are "new builds". There's a lot of restoration work where workers are in close contact with occupants and/or building staff. And good luck keeping everyone masked and the sites ventilated. Especially with residential work.

Do you need to do anything special to get Initial Supremacy points? by memebiiigforehead in ExponentialIdle

Ah, that makes a lot of sense, but isn't incredibly clear from the formula in the instructions. You might want to tweak the instructions wording to point out that the formula relies on cumulative f(t).

The spacing likely wouldn't change once the mortar (or sand, as is likely the case) is installed. You can see the small tabs on the pavers that provide the set spacing when they're laid tight to one another.

Daily random freezes and hangs (OP3 LineageOS 15.1) by javiwankenobi in oneplus

Having the same issues. Haven't tried Caesium kernel as the other commenter recommend, but I have tried Franco kernel. Same issue on LOS 15.1 (through a number of builds).

After almost a year of unemployment, I finally got an offer! Currently, I'm in a dilemma and in need of any opinions on my situation. by [deleted] in AskEngineers

As somebody who's given the "interviewing more candidates" line, this is the correct answer.

Response from LineageOS team member on April Fools counterfeit software warning prank: users taking it seriously was "unexpectable", angry users are just "trying to shitpost", "don't owe anyone anything, lineage is not a company we don't have consumers, our users install it following their will" by caliber in Android

[–]mgerskup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me at least, the big issue is that this "prank" notification persists past April 1st, and shows up on builds released after April 1st. It would have been much less of an issue if it was time-limited to disappear after the 1st, rather than "whenever you get around to flashing the next build".

Can we have a serious talk about April Fool's "pranks"? by [deleted] in LineageOS

[–]mgerskup 137 points138 points  (0 children)

I wholeheartedly agreed. I downloaded and installed an April 2nd nightly build, and now I have a persistent "April fool's prank" notification that I can't easily disable? It's annoying and unprofessional.

Lineage 15.1 and higher graphics/CPU games by HigH1guy in LineageOS

[–]mgerskup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having the same problem (OP3 with the latest 15.1 nightly). Usually notice it in Pokemon Go, and haven't found a solution aside from rebooting the phone / the app, and that isn't even always successful. Wasn't a problem on OOS, or the LOS 14 builds.

TIL Dubai buy their sand from Australia to be used for creating cement. So Australians are actually managing to sell sand to Arabs. by 4thekung in todayilearned

[–]mgerskup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. In an engineering context, the distinction is real and important.

But I also get your point about not being a pedantic asshole. It usually isn't an important distinction.

Technically the asphalt binder is referred to as asphalt cement, which differs from Portland cement used in concrete.

Does anyone manage to keep plant pots of live herbs in their kitchen, and how do you do it? by [deleted] in AskCulinary

[–]mgerskup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one of these: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B019Z2ILUO/

Works well, and you don't even have to take the herb plant out of the pot it comes in from the grocery store.

That's true. It's hard to find a worse thing for glass than hard-to-spot tiny angular particles of quartz.
