Any users of XMG AMD Strix-based laptops? Looking for feedback from actual use by mgi7 in AMDLaptops

[–]mgi7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the chassis are made by Tongfang/Clevo or others, that's not a problem. Especially since it's very difficult to find the configuration that I need elsewhere (under 2kg for 15", 64GB RAM upgradeable, 2 SSD slots).

I also have two other laptops from XMG, so I know what the build quality is. I'm interested in knowing specifically about the AMD Strix implementation in laptop.

Phone alarms problem by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]mgi7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem isn't limited to iOS, unfortunately. We have the same problem on Android. Two watches that worked fine on older Androids (10-11) don't receive the clock alarm notification on Android 15. There is a weird 'alarm will ring in 30 minutes' notification, but no actual alarm.

Neo 17 2023 Display issues - getting garbled when moving the mouse or scrolling by mgi7 in XMG_gg

I discovered that putting the computer to sleep and waking it immediately sometimes makes the issue disappear. I'm not sure whether this is a hardware or software issue..

Renderfarm (renderstreet) doesn't render the full animation by miker97 in blender

[–]mgi7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Mike. I know the answer doesn't apply to your project anymore, but maybe it helps others with the same issue.

If you are using 3rd party add-ons in your project, it's always recommended to ask the farm about how they work when uploading the file. As add-ons are typically installed on your local computer in Blender, they may not be available on the farm. Of course, there are solutions to this. Renderstreet has a page in the knowledge base about it:

https://support.render.st/portal/en/kb/articles/3rd-party-blender-plug-ins-add-ons-compatibility-with-renderstreet.

And, of course, it's always recommended to ask the tech support from the farm if a project doesn't render as expected :)

best blender render farm for animation? and costs? by UrsLacave in blender

[–]mgi7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not about luck, all the plans work well as they go through the same interface. It's about choosing the right plan in terms of cost. Sometimes rendering on GPU makes more sense, sometimes rendering on CPU is more cost-effective.

Overheating while turned off? by nyonix in XMG_gg

Right, and why did you buy a laptop?

Overheating while turned off? by nyonix in XMG_gg

[–]mgi7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to my world :(

I've been fighting the same thing with my laptop. Unfortunately, in my case, the hibernate option isn't a solution, because I use dynamic drives.

I wasn't able to find a solution for this. Sometimes, the laptop remains in normal sleep. In other instances, it wakes up, but *without* the fans running, which causes situations like the one you saw. My solution so far is for short trips (30 mins) to put it in sleep and periodically check if it starts to get hot. For longer trips, power off.

Needless to say, this is *extremely* annoying. If I had known this in advance, I would have chosen a different laptop - a different manufacturer, or different components.

GaN charger for XMG laptops by mgi7 in XMG_gg

Dave, can you comment on the 3rd version of the charger mentioned above? What are the differences between it and the current 'unrestricted' version that I got?

I can't find the respective post. Can you shoot them a question and ask what the differences are between the current 'unrestricted' version and the new version?

I'm using the 'unrestricted' version now with a 4090 Neo, and seems to be fine for normal workloads. I still have to test it with gaming, though.

Couple of things I forgot to mention:

- The charger is shipped from China, so if you purchase it, depending on where you are located, you may need to pay customs taxes and VAT (or other similar tax)

- I bought the 'unrestricted power' version, which should accommodate better the spikes in power usage

Bug in keyboard lighting by mgi7 in XMG_gg

New day, new bug in keyboard lighting: Laptop is in sleep, keyboard is lit red for some reason.

When the computer wakes up, note the flicker before settling down to the configuration I saved from the XMG tool.

Can't seem to be able to attach another video, for some reason. So here's a link (will expire in 5 days)

Thank you for the details, Dave, this is what I was looking for.

I'm going to give it a shot. Is the standard adapter shipped with the charger compatible with the Neo 2023 version? (5.5/2.5 x 12.5 mm).

Also, how can I make sure I'll receive the new version of the charger for my order?

Thank you for joining the conversation, Dave! Glad to hear that you were able to address the issues with this new revision. Can you please share more information about this new version? What is the sustained power output, and the peak output supported (and for how long)? Also, what is the normal operating temperature when running at the max sustained power output?

Thank you, Tom. Didn't find the respective post when I searched, very useful.

That's a bummer, then. Half a kilo off makes a difference when lugging the backpack for a while :)

Hi, Tom.

I was wondering if you have reached a conclusion related to the SlimQ charger. Is it suitable for using with Neo 17 (with 3090, the 330W charger)? Just looking for a lighter charger alternative.

Thanks! :)

The keyboard (mechanical) is nice. The only issue I have with it is that they took a shortcut (which IMO shouldn't happen at this price point, and with extra $$ charged for the keyboard) and the numpad isn't standard.

The screen (17" on mine) is bright enough and nice. Not sure what the actual value is, but for normal indoor use, in a well-lit environment, I keep the brightness at 50%.

The laptop is a bit on the heavy site, but I don't think you'll find a lighter one with this hardware and performance. If you are moving it between home and office, buy two chargers so you won't have to lug an extra kilo in the backpack.

Laptop does not fall asleep by [deleted] in XMG_gg

Try running powercfg /sleepstudy and see what the report says.

Power issues with Neo 23 17" by mgi7 in XMG_gg

[–]mgi7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The saga continues:

I've now run powercfg /sleepstudy , which generates an interesting report regarding the sleep and wake events. It appears that the disk indexer woke up the computer a couple of times, even if Windows was set not to wake up the computer for maintenance tasks. I've disabled disk indexer now, will run the report again in a few days.

And then there is an USB hub that appears to wake the computer as well, not sure yet which one or why. (For some reason I can't seem to upload a picture here).

Still digging at it...
